Naveen Andrews has apparently revealed that his character in Lost, Sayid, will be seen in a whole new light in the new series.

The British actor, 39, is back on Sky One in the fourth season of the hit sci-fi show as an Iraqi and former Republican Guard Soldier.

He told The Guardian: "You'll see him in a new light and it's genuinely surprising. It took me by surprise. There is romance, but I can't say where it is or how it is. It's a bit raunchy."

The previews promised another Oceanic Six reveal next week, but we will also learn about another major main character who's out in the world in the future, who doesn't fall under that banner. Who is that person? The end of this ep pretty much gives it away.

Remember the headspace Sayid was in at the beginning of the series, where he was gonna go straight and not torture people anymore and try to play nice with his fellow man? Well, in the future, that's all shot to hell. Emphasis on shot.

When I caught up tonight with Jeff Fahey (Frank the kick-ass "drunk" pilot), he told me what the fans have accused him of being God, Satan or some dude who's there to impregnate the women on the island. And the clincher? He hinted that one of those is true. What the hey? For more gorey details on that, check back next week for the video, but in the meantime...

KEN LEUNG "Miles":
Lost executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse created the role of Miles specifically for New York City native Ken Leung after catching his live-wire performance as Uncle Junior's unstable protégé in The Sopranos last year. Before signing on to the super-secret ABC series, though, the actor — who also played the porcupine-esque Kid Omega in X-Men: The Last Stand — called up Cuse and attempted to pry some info out of him. "After our conversation," Leung admits, "I was still more or less blind." Allow us to fine-tune the picture: Miles, like The Sopranos' Carter, is a hothead, but he's a uniquely gifted one. "He's after something he can get on the island," Leung reveals. "Or somebody." The part has proven easy in one respect. "Miles doesn't know how to be social, which is great," Leung says, "because I don't know how to be social."

REBECCA MADER "Charlotte":
Lost's lone new girl, Rebecca Mader, wants to be treated like one of the boys. "People see me as a girlie-girl because I'm always in full-on hair, makeup and heels in everything I do," groans the actress, who made fashionable appearances in The Devil Wears Prada and Fox's short-lived 2006 series Justice. "I was sick of it. I have this tomboy side, and I really wanted to do action stuff." Wish granted: One of Mader's first Lost scenes found her hanging upside down from a tree. "I was so happy!" she exclaims. Likewise, her character, Charlotte — who was changed from American to British after producers met the English-born actress — is thrilled about her arrival on the island. Maybe too thrilled. Could Charlotte prove to be nefarious? "Tune in, baby," Mader says with a laugh. "It's gonna be good!"

JEFF FAHEY "Lapidus":
Jeff Fahey hadn't seen one episode of Lost before landing on the Emmy-winning drama. But that's because the veteran actor (The Lawnmower Man and the '90s series The Marshal) had taken a hiatus from Hollywood to work with orphanages in Afghanistan. While it's a pursuit the soft-spoken Fahey is passionate about, it's not one he's particularly eager to expound upon: "I don't want [it] to take focus from the show." He's chattier about playing bushy-bearded Lapidus, the pilot of the helicopter responsible for bringing the freighter folks to the island. "It's a dream job," he says, "especially for someone who's been kicking around so long." And an experience, Fahey claims, that really isn't so different from his recent off-screen endeavors. "It's fascinating to go from Kabul to living in Waikiki," he admits. "But they're all just part of the journey."

JEREMY DAVIES "Faraday":
With the twitchy delivery of one line — "Rescuing your people, can't really say it's our primary objective" — Jeremy Davies manages to send chills down the spines of the survivors of Flight 815 and viewers. The film actor (Saving Private Ryan) has a way with words off screen as well. Take his self-deprecating explanation for joining the show: "The creators of Lost are endowed with some seriously certified, god-size talent. For a misfit like me, an offer to make coffee for those gentlemen is one I'd find terribly difficult to pass up." Fortunately, producers instead asked Davies to play the mysteriously troubled, intensely intelligent Faraday, who has a proclivity for both island experiments and mumbling. It's a character Davies, who studies quantum physics for fun, has embraced. "Faraday may be contending with a seismic metamorphosis under the surface. How's that for enigmatic?"

Like all great episodes of Lost, the season 4 premiere, "The Beginning of the End," left us overflowing with questions. Now that we've discussed why Hurley (Jorge Garcia) saw Charlie (Dominic Monaghan), who the Oceanic Six could be, and what the division of the castaways means for their futures, it's time to look ahead to the next new episode. This Thursday at 9pm, the mysterious freighter people will arrive on the island to either help or hurt our favorite castaways. Among this crew will be new characters played by Jeremy Davies, Rebecca Mader, Jeff Fahey, and Ken Leung. We may have no clue what their intentions are, but that doesn't mean we can't speculate.

ABC has released an exciting new promo trailer for the episode, which offers tantalizing glimpses of the new arrivals, as well as a quick look at wreckage of Flight 815.

The promo starts by reminding us that it's never too late to get Lost. ABC tends to say that a lot, and I know they want new viewers to just jump in any time, but Lost really doesn't seem like the type of show that you can start watching in the fourth season. I think it's way too late to get Lost, unless you hurry and watch the first three seasons on DVD.

Anyway, as the trailer begins we see the arrival of Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies), who was the first man to land on the island last week. Ben warns that the rescuers are a threat as we see someone falling from the sky and landing in the water. This is followed by a voice stating, "Oh my God. It's Oceanic 815." We then get a really swift glimpse of the 815 plane wreckage, which was also seen in the Oceanic Golden Pass commercial that aired during Eli Stone last week.

The rest of the trailer shows the Hydra logo, Sawyer (Josh Holloway) giving Ben (Michael Emerson) a beating, a quick shot of an animal skull, Locke (Terry O'Quinn) taking a stand, and Miles (Ken Leung) promising to tell the castaways why his crew has come to the island.

It's an exciting promo, and definitely offers enough interesting material to keep us talking until tomorrow night. Will someone be going to the Hydra station? What's up with the animal skull, which was also seen in an earlier Lost promo? And the biggest question of all, what do the freighter people want with the castaways?

We'll hopefully get answers to all of these questions when "Confirmed Dead" airs Thursday at 9pm on ABC.

Question: What did you think of the new Lost? I am hearing a lot of mixed reviews, but personally I loved it! — Kelly
Ausiello: I loved it as well. It wasn't the big slice of heaven that was last May's game-changing finale, but it was easily one of the best hours of TV so far this season. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for tomorrow night's episode, which would've merited a solid three and a half stars were it not for two annoying blunders — one of which should've been caught by Lost's typically crackerjack continuity police, and another that dumbs down the 815ers to the point where the castaways on Gilligan's Island look smart by comparison. I'm anxious to get your thoughts.

Question: I miss Juliet like a hard drug! What is she up to this season on Lost? Will we see more of her in the upcoming episodes? — Sam
Ausiello: A decent Juliet fix awaits you tomorrow night. Not only is there a nice little scene with her and Sayid on the beach, but she ends up saving the day — much to Kate's chagrin. Speaking of which, there's a Kate/Jack/Juliet moment that will have you peeing your pantaloons. It's that funny. It's also pretty subtle, so your full attention will be required.

Question: I'm sure you'll get hundreds of questions about the Oceanic 6, so I'll add my name to the list. Since I imagine the names of the other three members of the Oceanic 6 are too much to ask for, how about the genders? — Amy

Jorge himself brought that up and said that if anyone asks, he wanted everyone to know that that painting is hugely important because it was drawn by...Jorge himself. “I just thought to myself, what would Hurley be drawing? And given that he didn’t want an ocean view and wanted to be as far away from the island as possible, that seemed like the farthest place.” That's all it meant, according to J.G.

Lost Returns with a Big Bang...

The fourth-season premiere of ABC’s “Lost” delivered the best numbers in more than a year for the hit mystery drama last night, lifting the network to an easy first-place finish on the first night of sweeps.

“Lost” averaged a 6.7 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen overnights, the show’s best rating since its November 2006 fall finale. It also drew 16.1 million total viewers, its best number since November 2006.

The show was 16 percent above last May’s 5.9 18-49 season finale average and 14 percent above its full-season average of 5.9. Last spring it aired at 10 p.m. Wednesday.

“Lost” also knocked out its toughest competition, NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” which posted a season-low 2.8 rating at 9 p.m., down 24 percent from last week’s 3.7. The second hour of “Apprentice” did perk up to a 3.6.

“Lost” gave the series premiere of “Eli Stone” a nice boost at 10 p.m. as well. The show averaged a 4.2 rating, holding only 63 percent of “Lost’s” audience but easily winning the timeslot.

That helped ABC to a dominant victory last night, marking just the second time since 1991 that the network won the opening night of February sweeps.

ABC averaged a 5.3 average overnight rating and a 14 share. Fox was second at 3.2/8, NBC third at 2.8/7, CBS fourth at 2.4/6, Univision fifth at 1.6/4 and CW sixth at 1.4/4.

ABC led each hour of the night, beginning with a 4.9 at 8 p.m. for a “Lost” clip show. Fox was second that hour with a 3.1 for “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?,” with Univision and NBC tied for third at 2.1, Univision for “Al Diablo con los Guapos” and NBC for repeats of “My Name is Earl” and “The Office.” CBS was fifth with a 1.9 for a repeat of “CSI: NY” and CW sixth with a 1.6 for “Smallville.”

At 9 p.m. ABC led again with a 6.7 for “Lost,” while Fox was second again with a 3.3 for “Don’t Forget the Lyrics.” CBS and NBC tied for third at 2.8, CBS for a “CSI” rerun and NBC for “Apprentice,” with Univision fifth with a 1.6 for “Pasion” and CW sixth with a 1.3 for “Supernatural.”

ABC completed the nightly sweep with a 4.2 at 10 p.m. for “Stone,” followed by NBC with a 3.6 for its second half of “Apprentice.” CBS was third with a 2.4 for a repeat of “Without a Trace” and Univision fourth with a 1.2 for “Amas de Casa Desperadas.”

Among households, ABC led the night with an 8.3 average overnight rating and a 13 share. CBS was second at 6.9/11, Fox third at 6.2/9, NBC fourth at 4.5/7, CW fifth at 2.1/3 and Univision sixth at 1.9/3.

Lost: Article from NYMag...

Jack: Thinking about growing a beard.
Hurley: You'd look weird with a beard, dude.

Awwww, the very first episode of the season, and it centers around Hurley, the survivor with the biggest heart and the biggest (and most improbable) gut! Since Hurley is one of the few actively good characters on the show — loves his grandma; generous to a fault; no known history of grifting, adultery, drug-dealing, torture, fomenting genocide, stealing kidneys, or slipping drugs to pregnant ladies — putting this fuzzy, greasy bad-luck-magnet at the episode's center sets up the season perfectly, not least because it momentarily disguises the freaky DARKNESS of the show's new structure.

Because it turns out that flash forwards are far more grim than flashbacks. Mainly because they suggest that searing regret lies just two feet ahead, narratively speaking, from any fantasies-of-escape island celebrations. Apparently, only six people have made it back to the mainland: the Oceanic Six. There's Jack, Kate, and Hurley — plus whoever is in that coffin and two others, and they're quasi-celebrities (The Surreal Life: Black Rock?) Oh, and they've apparently made some deal with the devil that is torturing them with regret and making them talk in mysterious abstractions. Shame about that.

The Future: Pre–Jack Beard
The episode starts out in the “future” (and we're going to need to develop some bold new terms here, because this FF takes place before the earlier FF, which makes it, what? A flashback from a flash-forward? There must be a German term for this). Jack, a chip off the old block, is beardless and pouring himself a refreshing morning screwdriver. He's notably not surrounded by maps, suicidal, or driving around all oxy'd up and listening to Nirvana.

Instead, Hurley is the crazy one: He's seen the ghost of Charlie in a convenience store. After subsequently hallucinating a wetsuited Charlie crashing through a window in a police station and lying to a cop about knowing Ana Lucia, Hurley is happily tossed into a mental hospital to doodle igloos in peace. No dice: He's promptly pursued first by that cadaverous guy from The Wire (who now works for Oceanic Airlines, apparently even more corrupt than the city of Baltimore), then nagged by Charlie's Ghost (looking surprisingly hot), and finally, challenged to a game of H.O.R.SE. by Cleanshaven Jack, who is apparently in on whatever freaky deal these guys made with whatever devil they dealt with before or after or during their escape from the island but will only reference in roundabout, crazy-making Dark Secret dialogue.

Like an endless procession of Ghosts of Islands Past, each visitor engages poor Hurley in oblique manipulation: Wire Guy scares him, Charlie guilts him out, and Jack seems to be trying to make sure Hurley isn't going to spill their Dark Secret. “I don't think we did the right thing, Jack. It wants us to go back,” says Hurley. WHO WHAT WHA?

The Present: Post-Charlie
Meanwhile, or rather, way earlier, Desmond has returned to deliver the bad news: Charlie's dead and that's not Penny's boat. After some grieving and hiking and bickering, everyone gathers to debate: the Jackians (who are excitedly anticipating rescue); the sharpshooters and rescuers from the beach (who believe it's all a trap); tied-up Ben (who says they're all gonna die); Crazy Rousseau, who smacks Ben in the nose; and Alex and Karl. (Naomi, meanwhile, dies after slinking off into the woods with a knife in her back.) Oh, and John Locke, who says it's all a trap and they're all gonna die and everyone should follow him.

As they do every ten episodes or so, the survivors split bitterly in half! And so do our sympathies.

Because let's look at the big picture here: On Jack's side, we've got Kate, Juliet, Sayid, Sun, Jin, Rose, and Bernard. In other words, one love triangle pivoting on a prissy surgical bossypants, plus two happily married couples — plus Sayid, who is fantastic and does sway us a bit. (Desmond should be with them, too, but we got kind of confused and couldn't figure out where he ended up.)

But on Locke's side, there's Hurley, Sawyer, Claire, Aaron, Rousseau, Ben, Alex, and Karl — all the insane and most of the single people! Plus a very cute baby. GO TEAM LOCKE! There's great mind-game potential there, since the most tender characters (Claire and Hurley and Alex) are combined with the most insane mind-game masters (Locke, Sawyer, Ben and Rousseau). Besides, Alex can babysit Aaron, and Rousseau can have Moonlighting chemistry with her stolen daughter's adopted father.

As ever, Ben gets all the funniest line-readings: “Jack, with your permission, I'd like to go with John.”

But the best scene occurs just before this whole showdown, when poor Hurley stumbles into a horror movie: Using mere glimpses of a rickety shack, ANOTHER rickety shack, a silhouetted figure in a rocking chair, and then a big scary eye in a window, we were freaked out and baffled, and fine with it. Or at least, baffled until we saw the work of freeze-framers online.

What We Know Now
Jack is willing to shoot Locke right in his big scarred moon face.
At least some of the Locke followers do leave the island, since Hurley is among the Oceanic Six.
Hug Kate once, shame on Kate; hug Kate twice, shame on you.

Lost is back. And so are some of its fans.

Thursday night's season premiere averaged 16.1 million viewers, up nearly 2.5 million viewers over its third-season average, according to Nielsen Media Research estimates.

As ABC's competition can attest, the performance was also Lost's least watched premiere ever, down nearly 3 million viewers from its third-season opener.

So, to recap: The show was up and down.

But, really, it was up.

After 18.8 million tuned in for Lost's third-season premiere in the fall of 2006, the show slumped. Last May's cliffhanger finale, which was well-received and viewed as a sign the show was creatively back on track, averaged 13.9 million; for the season, the show averaged 13.8 million, an all-time low.

Thursday's episode came after cocreator J.J. Abrams' crew assured fans that they did, too, know how the mysterious saga of airplane crash survivors was going and, indeed, where it will end. They even gave a date: 2010.

In what was billed as another sop to fans, ABC delayed Lost's premiere until the winter to let the fourth season run week in, week out through May (and to allow the network to order only 16, not 22, episodes). Then came the writers' strike, and only eight completed episodes, but still...

With Thursday's opener filling in the picture on the "Oceanic Six," the castaways we're told who made it back to the mainland, the series has the blogosphere squarely in its corner again.

* "The return of Lost was worth a nine-month wait," Remote Access said.
* "The episode was pretty much a masterpiece," said BuddyTV.
* "I loved the premiere," went a user comment on TVSquad. "I wished it was really two hours instead of the fake advertising by ABC making it seem like it was a two-hour premiere."

Yes, about that two-hour premiere...

It was a two-hour premiere night, with a recap episode airing at 8 p.m. and the real thing airing at 9 p.m.

The plan worked for ABC, which scored 13.1 million viewers for the recap—a number that last week would have placed the clip show in the top 10.

All of the goodwill for Lost rubbed off, to a degree, on Eli Stone.

The new fantasy series about a lawyer who develops a conscience won its 10-11 p.m. time slot, averaging 11.6 million viewers. The stats would look more impressive if Eli Stone hadn't (a) squandered more than 25 percent of its Lost lead-in and (b) started almost exactly where The Nine started last season.

Just so you know, for ratings purposes, it's better to be compared to the Oceanic Six than The Nine.

It was awesome, was it not?

No disrespect to any other series, but tonight's return of Lost was so well written, produced, acted and directed it felt like a movie amid the underwhelming sea of Television 101 college projects that have been airing during the strike. (Yes, there are a few exceptions, but still.)

More important, after a third season that left quite a few fans feeling unsatisfied from time to time, producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse seemed to have sent us a clear message: The show you once loved and obsessed over and couldn’t stop thinking about is back. Boo. Freaking. Ya.

WHAT WE LEARNED

The heart is back. (God bless you, Jorge Garcia.)

The tears are back. (Hurley telling Claire about Charlie = heartbreaking.)

The soilers are back. (The glass breaks! Charlie reappears! Jack shoots Locke! Sort of!)

The Losties we love are back. (The whole gang reuniting at the front of the plane? Ahhh! Tell me that scene wasn’t made of pure gold.)

I’m, um, a little excited to have something to be excited about, in case you didn’t notice. Now for the juicy part...

Death Becomes Charlie: How freaking awesome was Dominic Monaghan's surprise return and that scene with Hurley? Charlie looked so hot and confident and cool—like a bona fide rock star!—that I had to text some love to Dom and tell him so. He shot back: "Sooo glad you liked the NEW Charlie." He said when he decided to return, he knew "it must be a revolutionized Charles." Smart man! The new Charlie rocks.

The Credits Were Suspicious: Not only did Charlie make a fantastic reappearance, but it was truly heartwarming to see Dominic Monaghan and Harold Perrineau listed alphabetically as full-fledged castmembers in the opening credits, was it not? Did you notice John Terry was listed as a guest star? Did you see him in the rocking chair in the disappearing cabin with a painting of a dog and somebody's eyeball?! Also, at risk of ruining minisode 13, I'll use that as a segue to "So It Begins," which is below, and which you must see if you haven't already. Then, of course, discuss the insane implications of this in the Comments. Just as soon as your head stops spinning, of course.

Father Benjamin: Regarding Ben's ongoing prophecies of death and destruction, I'm gonna hafta quote the sage Xander Harris: "Generally speaking, when scary things get scared? Not good."

Love Means Never Having to Say You're Sorry: Did anyone else find it distressing in the extreme that Hurley apologized for going with Locke lo those many years ago? Remember when the big questions were "Guys, where are we?" and "Who are we?" and "What is this place?" I think that the question of the season—now that we have flashforwards—is "What the hell happened on that damn island?"

Biggest Question of the Night: Lance Reddick's character Matthew Abbadon (anagrams include: What Bad Boat Men?) asked what I consider to be the question of the night: "Are they still alive?" If the Oceanic Six (Hurley, Jack, Kate and three players to be named later) are back in the world, where are the rest of our beloved Oceanic survivors? Not to mention your native Ben-Karl-Alex-Danielle-Juliet-Desmond types. Abbadon's question, not to mention Hurley believing that Jack wanted to find out if he "was gonna tell," not to mention Charlie telling Hurley that he's needed, would seem to suggest there are still survivors living on the island (or somewhere), and they are threated or endangered in some way. "Are they still alive?" leads directly to so many other questions. How'd the Six escape? Why were some left behind? Will the Six go back? Can the Six go back? We'll find out sometime over the 47 episodes left to go. Eee!

Anagrams Are So 2004: In Biblical terms, Abbadon is a dude Wikipedia describes as "the destroying angel of the apocalypse." Bet that's not his Oceanic Airlines business card.

More Things to See and Do: Notice it was Action 8 News? There ain't no Channel 8 in L.A., but it sure is one of the numbers. Also, Big Mike had a crush on his partner Ana-Lucia—what the hell? And did anyone else think that Hurley puttering about in his red bathrobe at Santa Rosa looked a lot like a red-robed Hurley the Baptist from Charlie's "save the baby" dream in the season-two episode "Fire + Water"? And last but not least, the Sharpie strikes again: According to Lostpedia, the diver in the mirror was Charlie, and this time his hand says "They need you."

WHAT LIES AHEAD

Next week is one of the unusual episodes that come around every so often, like "The Other 48 Days," in which we get a big download about a new element being introduced to the show. There will also be beatings, subterfuge and gunplay. We'll see a lot of the island, an important new number is added to the show's mythology, and there will be some new visitors to what Kate once called the Wonderful World of Not Knowing What the Hell Is Goin' On.

If you’re a Lost fan who watched last night’s episode, you must read this. My bat phone just rang up with Jorge Garcia on the other end to talk about Hurley’s mental status, Dominic Monaghan’s return and some things no one knows about last night's episode, including who was really in the chair in Jacob's house when they shot it. (Shhh!)

All I’ve wanted to do since last night is give Hurley a hug.
Really?

That was a fantastic episode, and you knocked it out of the park. I laughed when you cannonballed. I cried when you broke the news to Claire. Your performance was better than ever, and I know the fans loved it.
Wow. Thank you. That’s really good to hear. I felt good about that episode. When I got the script, it was like the heart of the show was back. And even more than that, I felt like—as soon as we all got our scripts for that premiere—that sense of "Oh my god did you read it?" or "Did you get the next script?" was back, just like we were back in season one. We couldn’t wait for the next script.

There was some creepy stuff in that episode. It took us a while to figure out where John Terry (Jack’s father) was. And then Damon said to "look for the white shoes" and it was like, "Holy crap! Jack’s dad is in Jacob’s house!"
Me too. That wasn’t the way it was in the script. There was someone else in the chair.

What? Really? Was it a different person, or they didn’t tell you who was in the chair?
We shot it with someone else in the chair.

Are you allowed to say who was in the chair originally?
Yeah. I think so. It was me. I was in the chair when we shot it.

Crazy town! Why did they change it?
I don’t know. At first I thought maybe they decided that putting Jack’s father there was a much better twist, which it was, so they changed it. But now I think maybe they planned that all along and didn’t want to have it in the script because they didn’t want anyone to know about it.

So, it seems the producers are getting very crafty in keeping those secrets.
Yeah, I think so. I know that when guest stars come on, they’ll have them read with one actor and a script, and then when they get it, it’s a totally different script and scene and actor. And last night, the scene in the police department also was different. When we shot it, it was an aquarium. Like, a real aquarium. And none of us knew it would be Charlie inside there. They added that later on.

Well, that was a great twist, too. Did you hear about what was written on his hand? "They Need You."
Oh, cool. I think that's what he said to me at the asylum.

So, how was it for you shooting that scene with Dominic? Was it a nice surprise for you all that he would be coming back?
Definitely. A lot of people have said that they felt Charlie and Hurley were really the most solid relationship on the island. And so to have him come back was just very cool. And I liked that he was sort of a better version of Charlie. A lot of people, when they die on our show, like with Ian, they come back and they are like the heaven version of themselves. How they would want to be.

Do you think that Hurley is really mentally ill? Or is there some mystical element from the island making him see things?
In [last night’s] episode, I was playing it that Hurley was so haunted by Charlie and by Charlie’s last words that he couldn’t get past it. And so he wanted to go to the one place, the last place where he felt safe, and that was Santa Rosa.

I have an interesting question from a fan, if you don’t mind. Nicholas in Peoria, Illinois, asks: "Please settle this ongoing debate from our Lost party last night. First, what did Jacob say to Hurley when Hurley was lost in the jungle by the house? Second, in the third-season finale, with Jack's flash-forward, didn't one of the doctors ask, 'Do you wanna go upstairs and talk to your dad?' So, would that mean more people are dying and coming back in the Lost universe? That would explain Jack's dad on the Island."
For the first part, um, let me look at my script to make sure...But yeah, there wasn’t anything in the script as far as what was being said. That was just jungle whispering. I don’t know if it was Jacob or the jungle or whatever, but it’s just whispering. I’m sure some guy somewhere will figure it out, like the guys who figured out what Shannon and Walt said.

As for the second part, did someone really say that to Jack? I didn’t know that. Maybe that was sort of a red herring to throw people off the scent of that being a flash-forward. I really don’t know. But I do know that the producers have said that when someone dies, they really do die. They are dead.

Do you feel like last night’s episode was representative of how good the next seven episodes will be? Are they on that same level?
The writing is really strong for all eight, and there are some really good twists. There’s definitely a big crazy moment that they end the eighth episode with that people are going to be talking about.

Was it sort of jarring, shutting down production in the middle of the season?
Yeah, but at least we have eight episodes, which is a good number, and I feel like every episode has some kind of great cliffhanger or question at the end of it that will have people coming back, and the thing at the end of eight is pretty major.

Do you think it will be possible to produce more episodes this season if the strike ends soon?
I honestly don’t know. I say all the time that I’m so glad I’m a very small piece of the pie that is the gigantic huge show Lost is. But I’m ready to go back. I’ve caught up on my fan mail, and now the boredom has sort of set in.

Well, thank you so much for calling. And congrats again on a truly great episode.

Star Reveals his Heroin Addiction...

Lost star Naveen Andrews has spoken out about his addiction to heroin.

The actor, who plays Sayid on the hit US series, said he lost two years of his life to the drug before checking into rehab in a bid to get clean.

In an interview on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, he said: "There was a danger of me copping it. I lost two years to heroin, but I was able to work, I don’t know how I did it.

"You can take incredible abuse and still work... I collapsed on a job because of booze. When I was younger... it was a miracle I got any work done. On The English Patient I was warned. But I used to collapse out of shot."

He added that he had finally kicked the habit because of his son, saying: "The turning point was I drove my son when I was drunk and he was scared, and that’s when I decided to go into rehab in LA."

The 39-year-old said he has no plans to leave the show, although he admitted that the quality of the scripts had deteriorated after the first two series.

He told Ross: "I’m still proud of the first season, around the third I thought they were winging it, the writing was poor but I’m definitely doing two more years.”

Friday Night With Jonathan Ross airs tonight on BBC One at 10.35pm.

Lost: The Oceanic 6...

Even with last season's Lost finale, which brilliantly introduced us to the flash forward, I still enjoyed the on-island action more. Last night, for the first time I can remember, the off-island action was the best part of the episode. The advantages the flash forwards have as opposed to flash backs is this: flash backs can only really answer questions, flash forwards can ask questions. Within the first five minutes of Lost's season 4 premiere, we received a plethora of new knowledge: Jack, though still a drinker, was at one point content to be off the island. Jack is well aware that Hurley is off the island. Hurley is still prone to bouts of crazy. There is an Oceanic 6 and they are famous. The mysteries came fast and furious over the flash forward, and this allowed the writers to create a more methodical set-up to the on-island drama in the premiere. Last night was about positioning on the island. The conflicts of the finale were more or less resolved and now we have two clear factions and every one of the castaways had to make a decision that they will forever deal with. The episode was pretty much a masterpiece. That Lost was able to produce a satisfying premiere after the bar was set so astronomically high by last season's finale is an incredible achievement in and of itself.

In honor of the Oceanic 6, let's take a look at six different aspects from “The Beginning of the End.”

1.The Repercussions of Charlie's Death

Charlie's death did a lot of things last night. It gave Locke the ammo he needed to come back to the group (though he was probably pretty happy that he never loaded that gun). It gave Hurley a call to war and the courage to stand up to Jack. It was certainly the deciding factor in Sawyer and Claire deciding to go with Locke and Hurley back to the barracks. It caused two very heartbreaking moments as well: Hurley telling Claire the bad news and Sawyer deciding to break away from Kate. Brutal stuff.

2.Jacob and Locke

I thought it was pretty clear that that was Locke's eye Hurley saw in Jacob's cabin. Also, after examining the screen shots, it was pretty clear that Christian Shepherd was sitting in Jacob's rocking chair. Now, I still don't think that Jacob is Christian Shepherd or anything like that, but then again, I don't really know much of anything about Jacob. I wonder if we'll ever get to know what Locke heard from Jacob last night. Maybe it was nothing, maybe it was something as simple as take people to the barracks.

3.The Oceanic 6

We can assume that Jack, Kate and Hurley are three members of the Oceanic 6. One other member could be whoever was in the casket. Or, it could have been Hurley in the casket. I love that they are famous and I love that they are living some sort of gigantic lie regarding their rescue. It seems likely that over the course of this season, we'll see at least one or two more flash forwards that reveal members of the Oceanic 6.

4.Charlie's Return

I definitely didn't expect to see Charlie return so soon. For a moment, I was convinced that he really was back and alive. By the end, it seemed most likely that he was just a part of Hurley's insanity. But, I liked the different attitude Charlie came with – cool guy, a bit aloof. The main point is that Hurley is constantly haunted by the island and is presumably the first of the Oceanic 6 to feel guilt for whatever circumstances led them off the island.

5.Lance Reddick

Here's the thing: I thought Lance Reddick was supposed to be a main character this season. If so, how is it that Hurley did not recognize him when he visited Hurley in the institution? It's also crazy to see Daniels from The Wire play a creepy bad guy. And he was quite creepy in his one scene. I still believe we'll be seeing Reddick in the on-island stuff, maybe just as a behind-the-scenes leader on the freighter.

6.The Basketball Scene

The best scene of the episode came when Jack visited Hurley on the basketball court. Jack's clearly fake positive attitude was a bit frightening, just wanting to find out if Hurley would “tell.” We learned a lot in this scene. Hurley thinks they should go back. We know for sure that this happens before the actions of the season finale's flash forward. Hurley talks about a mysterious “he” and refers to the island as “it.” Hurley wants to go back. Jack wants to make sure that Hurley won't “tell.” And, the best: Hurley, despite getting off the island, is sorry that he went with Locke instead of Jack. Great stuff.

Lost Makes Triumphant Return...

One of the most highly anticipated television premieres of the season aired tonight – Lost returned to ABC's lineup. With the writer's strike looming heavily over any hope for good, quality television this season (even though negotiations between the WGA and other entities are looking hopeful right now) it is a relief to see this series come back to the small screen with not only a punch, but a kick in the balls.

It's still a bust – after all, we were originally promised a 16-episode season. But because of the strike, we'll have to do with eight episodes, and there's only one reason I won't protest that.

Brian K. Vaughan, the genius writer behind the epic comic book series Y: The Last Man, has signed on as a writer for Lost. I am unsure how much influence he had on this first episode, but Vaughan, whose credits also include Ex Machina and Runaways, will be sure to bring his storytelling expertise to the table in the next few episodes. He attests that “...these eight episodes are eight of the best in the entire series.”

If this season premiere is any indication, Vaughan might be right. This was, by far, one of the greatest episodes of the series to date, and I think it is the best season premiere we've seen thus far. With people like Vaughan on board, I think we can expect nothing but greatness from the next seven episodes.

Now, I don't want to give anything away. But if you're like me, you've noticed a few things. First off – Hurley may be far more important to the story than people previously thought. Second – six people make it off the island (the “Oceanic Six,” as Hurley refers to them). Finally, at least one of the survivors – Jack – thinks that they made a mistake by leaving the island.

Will the writers of this show ever be able to answer all the questions raised by the ongoing storyline? I sure as hell hope so. The mystery of that island not only makes the characters more interesting than the people I meet on a daily basis, but it gives me a reason to keep following their adventures for the next seven weeks. And when it comes down to it, that's what this type of storytelling is all about.

The fourth-season premiere of ABC’s “Lost” led Thursday night, although it was down marginally from its previous season debut in October 2006.

“Lost” earned a 6.7 preliminary Nielsen rating among adults 18 to 49, down 13% from the season-three premiere.

ABC pointed out that it’s the show’s first original episode to air in eight months, the show premiered on a new night and time, and the rating was well above last season’s average.

Critics have been full of praise, with USA Today’s Robert Bianco saying the premiere was “a heart-stopping, perfectly pitched episode” and the San Francisco Chronicle’s Tim Goodman calling the first two episodes “roller coasters of fast action and revelation.”

The show was heavily advertised as a two-hour premiere, but the first hour was actually a backstory clip show (psych!) that earned the second-highest rating of the night (4.9).

The debut of ABC’s “Eli Stone” in the 10 p.m. slot won the hour (4.2), but was down slightly from the premiere of “Big Shots” in the time period earlier this season and lost 17% of its demo rating in the second half-hour.

Fox came in second, with “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” (3.1) and “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” (3.3) continuing to perform above average now that “American Idol” is boosting Fox’s viewership levels.

NBC was third, with comedy repeats leading into a two-hour “Celebrity Apprentice” (3.2). The return of “Lost” helped knocked “The Apprentice” to its lowest Thursday night rating ever (excluding Thanksgiving).

CBS was fourth with repeats of “CSI: NY” (1.9), “CSI” (2.8) and “Without a Trace” (2.4).
In fifth place, The CW had its best “Smallville” rating in a couple of months (1.6), followed by “Supernatural” (1.3).

The return of “Lost,” albeit a two-hour repeat of last season’s finale, buoyed ABC’s ratings on Wednesday during a night otherwise dominated by Fox’s “American Idol” and “The Moment of Truth.” According to Nielsen’s estimates, the two Fox programs delivered the night’s largest audiences by far, 25.3 million viewers at 8 for “American Idol,” followed by 17.9 million for “The Moment of Truth” at 9. ABC ranked a distant second for the night among adults 18 to 49, with “Wife Swap” at 8 (5.8 million), followed by the “Lost” rerun at 9 (8.5 million), which the network enhanced with on-screen pop-ups to fill in the back story. In total viewers, however, ABC finished third behind Fox and NBC, which benefited from “Deal or No Deal” at 8 (9.8 million) and “Law & Order” at 10 (11.1 million). CBS finished fourth over all with repeats.

Filming "Lost" in Hawaii is no day at the beach, according to actor Michael Emerson.
"We shoot so much outdoors," Emerson said in a phone interview from his New York City home. The 53-year-old plays the castaway drama's über-villain Ben Linus, leader of the island-dwelling "Others.". "We shoot in the jungle, the mountains, often at night and in the rain. You have to deal with sunburn and the bugs and doing take after take, running through a jungle full of roots and holes. It is impossible to escape without some bumps and bruises."

That being said, Emerson is champing at the bit to get back on set to film the remaining eight episodes of the hit ABC series' fourth season. Production was halted after the first eight due to the writers strike.
Emerson shared his thoughts earlier this week on the strike, his bad guy reputation and the new season.

Have you ever been to Tucson?
"I have not. The desert parts of America are really attractive to me, yet they are parts of the country I have not visited. I haven't been anywhere in the Southwest beyond Southern California."

How has the writers strike affected you?
"It provided sort of a long holiday break in December. I was mainly occupied with socializing and shopping. We also traveled a bit to see family and stuff. Some of the initial charm has worn off at this point. Now we are thinking, 'What is our next move?' I've involved myself back in the New York theater scene to the extent that I can, doing readings, going to plays, auditioning for stuff that might possibly happen in the future."

You managed to squeak out eight episodes of the new season before the strike hit. Is it right back to work when the strike ends?
"I think ABC's official position is that we will finish this season, if we can. As you can probably guess, there is a point somewhere beyond February or early March at which they'll just have to throw in the towel and wait for next year.
"It would be a drag. Even though I'm on the show, I am still a fan of the show. I like to watch and I'm interested in the story. I am eager to know where this season is going. I feel like someone came and tore the script out of my hands when I was only halfway done with it. I'm curious to see where they want to go with it."

Do you get recognized a lot?
"I do. It kind of depends on how I'm dressed and what glasses I'm wearing. But people do recognize me. They are usually kind of funny about it. They tend to treat me formally because the character is so formal. They like to pretend they are a little bit afraid of me. It is cute. People call me Mr. Emerson and keep their distance."

What can viewers expect from the new season?
"We're going to have that added layer of the flash-forwards, which is going to be explored in a lot of interesting and dramatic ways. Everything is going to be ramped up this season. Our show used to be about the battle between two camps of people. Now there is going to be a third cast, a group of new characters coming in that the audience will get to know.
"These characters are eccentric, dangerous, mysterious characters. It is going to force new alliances among people who were previously enemies."

And what's in store for Ben? "Ben is separated from his resources. He is a miserable, beaten up mess. He is being dragged around the jungle on the end of a rope. He has no warriors or weapons. What we get in Season Four is Ben winging it. He has to improvise now and live by his wits."

Lost Actor Finds Redemption...

Many actors will create a history for their character even if it is not provided in the script. "Lost" star Michael Emerson saw no such need in playing the mysterious Henry Gale/Ben Linus.

"Creating a history for a character helps when you are doing a stage play because you have to do a lot of storytelling in a short window. So it is good to have the character's history already worked out," Emerson said. "In this case, I didn't need to know that much. In fact, this is a character that plays better if less is fleshed out. This is a guy about" whom "little is known."

After an eight-month hiatus, Emerson and the rest of the cast get to return to their roles. The fourth-season opener of "Lost" airs at 9 tonight on WXYZ-TV, Channel 7, ABC.

Emerson's character wasn't supposed to be around for four episodes, let alone for the opening of the fourth season. The Emmy-winning actor was signed for only a three-episode arc.

"But they brought me back for another episode. That turned into six and then I never went home," Emerson said. "I will tell you, if I had known on my first trip to Hawaii that this could have been for a long-running role, I would have been far more nervous."

Emerson clicked with the producers so he became the leader of "the Others," the group of island residents who are trying to control the plane crash survivors on the other side of the island.

The Iowa native was happy to stay with the character. He's always liked playing characters who are just a little ambiguous. He feels they are more true to life.

"We don't really meet pure heroes and villains in life. The fact is no one is altogether good or altogether wicked. That's what makes people so interesting. There is usually a logic even in villainy," Emerson said.

He uses his work on "The Practice" as an example. Emerson played serial killer William Hinks. The character certainly had a dangerous element to him, but Hinks also was polite, kept a tidy house and was well-mannered. These are sterling qualities not always associated with serial killers.

And in the case of "Lost," Emerson has never played his character as a bad guy. He plays him as a person with a hidden agenda.

Along with this complicated and mysterious character, "Lost" may have given Emerson one of the most unusual acting situations ever. His wife, Carrie Preston, who is 13 years his junior, appeared on one episode as his mother. Talk about your Oedipus wrecks.

The sequence was one of the show's many flashbacks that provided some clues into the life of Emerson's character. The actor laughs at the odd bit of casting and said that he and Preston had some interesting discussions about the role.

As for all of those flashbacks, get ready for a season of flash forwards.

"It is a stroke of genius," Emerson said. "This show has been told in two time zones" (past and present). "Now it will be told in three time zones."

The looks into the future will show how some of the castaways were rescued.

Those stories will be told in at least eight new episodes. This was supposed to be a 16-episode season, but the writers strike ended production at the halfway point. Emerson, who is cautious not to reveal too many details, let slip that either by chance or design, that eighth episode does deal with a big event.

The final entry in our series of Lost on-set interviews is with Josh Holloway. As bad boy con artist Sawyer, he's the guy some fans love to hate, and other fans just love. Sawyer has made quite the journey over the first three seasons, making enemies, possibly finding love with Kate (Evangeline Lilly), and exacting revenge on the man who he deemed responsible for the death of his parents. What does season 4 of Lost have in store for Sawyer?

On his set visit to Hawaii in October, BuddyTV contributing writer Jon Lachonis sat down with the charming Southern boy to learn his thoughts on where his character is going in the new season. Continue reading to read the full transcript and listen to the mp3 audio file of the interview.

How is season 4 going for you so far? Do you think there's a lot of new surprises for the fans?

Oh, absolutely. It's truly. . .it truly astounds me still that they can shock us as a cast and completely blow us away, because we of course have been involved with it since the beginning. Though we are on a need to know basis, we have ideas and so forth, and a little more information. But this season has really -- boy, has it gotten concise. Now that they've been able to give an end date to the show there's no more wasting time to elongate the story or whatever. Now it's like razor sharp focus, so hold on to your seats because every episode is bam bam bam. It's really moving the story along.

For Sawyer himself, in season 3 he seemed to develop in the light side and the dark side at the same time. Is that something that will continue in season 4?

Yes. The nature of his character has been that he's constantly battling the good in him versus what he's learned as a defense mechanism pretty much in the world, which is kind of his evil side. This whole character's journey has been a journey to his humanity I feel like, but he has big slips. Last year, when he started killing and just became a killer all of a sudden, it was disturbing to him as well. I think he's kind of hit the wall with the threats of these other people, with the threats of the island, with the never knowing if he's getting off, not knowing if he wants to get off, he don't even know anymore. But he hit the wall last year, like enough of these people, and that killer came out.

In season 4, he's kind of backpedaling a little bit. I think in his own psyche and his whole make up he's trying to not go to the dark side. It's that fine line constantly with his character, and I think he scares himself sometimes. This time he's not really. . .on the outside he's not showing that he cares about that or other people's judgments, but he does, and he realized he overstepped something within himself. That's gonna take some working out, and hopefully he won't go fully to the dark side, but we'll see. I'm open, whichever way they want to go, it's just fun to walk the line. I love walking the line.

As far as your career outside of Lost, has the new shooting schedule and the reduced demands of that opened new opportunities for you?

Well, it's kind of hard to tell right now because of the impending strike. We thought we were going to have all this time to possibly pursue some movies, but the problem is that they're moving production up. All the movies that would have gone normally in March, go now in December or January because they're trying to get production beginning before the strike's in. So I don't know, it's all up in the air right now, but yes, theoretically, yes. We would have a lot more time to pursue other options, which really I'm looking forward to. As an actor, I love doing this job, I love Sawyer. But I'm an actor, I want to explore some other things. In that limited pocket before, it's very difficult to find a role that you can do during that pocket and that is the right role to do. Now, getting in the movie business is like playing chess. You make the wrong moves early on, you're done. Now I've made some mistakes, I've learned from them, and I'm being patient and waiting. Doing a lot of auditioning, a lot of meeting people, so we shall see.

With the new people on the island, has that moved the threats away from being centered on the island? Is everything on the outside now, or are there still issues to deal with on the island itself in the new season?

Both. Both, definitely. The new people arriving just opens the story up even bigger. It doesn't go one direction or the other, one doesn't isolate or cancel the other out. They're brilliant [the writers], they timed it perfectly. So they add another dynamic pretty much, and also the dynamic of are we getting off? Are we not? Let me see, what did you guys see last time? You know that Naomi dropped in, you know her.

Yep, and we know that someone on the freighter named Minkowski–

Okay, so you got the freighter. It's gonna blow your mind, I'm not kidding you, where this goes. These people, the arrival of these other people I guess, is the beginning of the intertwining of the story. It's all gonna come together, they're a major part of it too. You're just not gonna believe it.

Would you go as far as to say that they're connected to the island?

That I'm not quite sure yet. I don't really know, honestly from what I've gotten so far, how involved they are or how connected they are personally. Are they just a tool? I don't know. I don't know if they know exactly what their part is too, but that could also be a reveal later. As for the rest of it, I can't really tell.

In the hopes of luring new viewers to Lost, ABC is airing last season's finale tonight. Since the show is so complex that missing one episode will leave your head spinning, the network has added Cliff Notes to this re-airing.

ABC is labeling its revamped finale “Lost, Enhanced,” and it will include explanations of characters and events that will slide up in a bar of text at the bottom of the screen. So if Jack is in the middle of a confrontation with Ben, Michael Benson [executive vice president for marketing of ABC Entertainment] said, the running text commentary may explain that this is not Jack’s first encounter with Ben, or that Ben was first known as Henry Gale.

Citing that name may also inspire references to what Mr. Benson called the “pop culture clues” that abound in “Lost.” The show’s executive producers, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, have always called these references “Easter eggs”: hidden clues planted to add pleasure to the close reading by rabid fans. (One example: Henry Gale is Dorothy’s uncle in “The Wizard of Oz,” and the character in “Lost” said he arrived on the island in a hot-air balloon.)

One thing to be wary of when watching this enhanced rerun is that Lindelof and Cuse did not upgrade the episode as they were already on strike with the Writers Guild of America.

Absence does make the heart grow fonder — and more forgiving too. The eight-month wait between new episodes of "Lost" (8 p.m. Thursday on WLS-Ch. 7) might have prompted me to ignore any faults that accompanied the drama’s return.

But there aren’t any faults. OK, maybe Jack (Matthew Fox) got on my nerves just a bit. Otherwise, I blissfully enjoyed every minute of “Lost’s” smashing Season 4 start (which is preceded by a one-hour catch-up episode 7 p.m. Thursday, and an "enhanced" airing of the Season 3 finale 8 p.m. Wednesday).

The first two episodes of “Lost’s” fourth season are jampacked with hidden agendas, mysterious new characters, shifting alliances, jaw-dropping clues and delicious suspense. When I found myself stopping the episodes at various points to eagerly discuss timelines and harbingers and even the significance of various characters’ names with my equally impressed couch-mate, I knew it was a good sign. Yes, “Lost” is back, in a big way. But it’s also back in a small way.

Here’s the bad news: Only eight episodes were made before the Writers Guild of America strike shut down production on the ABC show. We could gnash our teeth about what on earth we’re expected to watch in April (aside from the fourth season of “Battlestar Galactica”), but for now, let’s just savor these island adventures while we can.

Last December, however, “Lost” executive producer and co-creator Damon Lindelof sounded a little jittery about how the new season would be received by the show’s fans. After a season of brutal battering from critics and online commenters alike, the Season 3 finale had been mostly well-received.

But it also changed the dynamic of the show in a profound way. Scenes in the finale of an angry, bearded Jack, it turned out, were not from his past. They took place in the future, after he and Kate were rescued from the island.

The change is “exciting for us as writers, because we were so sick of writing flashback stories,” Lindelof said over lunch at a Los Angeles restaurant. “We’ve changed the paradigm of the show, but in doing so, it’s a fairly new world in terms of how it’s going to be watched.”

The show hasn’t entirely abandoned flashbacks. But figuring out the “new rules” that “Lost” plays by “is going to be part of the fun of the new season,” he said. “All I’ll say is, we’re done telling flashback stories that are not relevant to the uber-story of the island.”

And that story has far more momentum now that the flash-forwards contain small but tantalizing clues about how the islanders were rescued and what happened after they got home.

“When you watch the flash-forwards, there’s an emotional component, but you’re also completely engaged on a plot level, because you’re like, ‘How did they get here?’” Lindelof noted.

“My fundamental thinking is, half the people are going to think it’s great, and half the people are going to say, ‘This is not the “Lost” that I know and love, and I want it to go back to being the way it was.’ And of course those will be the same people who were kvetching about the flashbacks being boring,” Lindelof said.

There was kvetching last season, and lots of it. The second-season murmurings of complaint became a tidal wave of bellyaching midway through “Lost’s” third season. Season 3 had a few terrific high points (Hurley in his VW bus was one, the discovery of Jacob's shack was another), but many thought the once-taut drama had lost momentum. A vocal segment of fans and critics felt many episodes, and especially those that showcased seemingly unnecessary flashbacks to the characters’ pre-crash lives, were just plain boring.

It didn’t help that just as the show was struggling with a backlash, “Heroes,” a genre-tinged hit drama that debuted during “Lost’s” third season, appeared to be moving things along – some of the time, anyway – at a more efficient rate.

“I became entrenched in the DNA of that show, just because very early on, the producers – [‘Heroes’ creator] Tim [Kring] and the other writers – were besieged by the critics and the fans alike, who were saying, how is your show not going to be like ‘Lost’?” Lindelof said.

“I don’t know why [‘Lost’ and ‘Heroes’] have been pitted against each other,” said Lindelof, who added that he’s a fan of the NBC show.

But it’s easy to see why the two shows inspire such passion – and frequent comparisons too. They both have complicated plots that are open to a wide range of interpretations, they both draw from mythology, comic books, pop culture and classic literature, and they both feature iconic characters that inspire unusual devotion.

Thanks to all that – and thanks to dedicated online outreach by the writers for both shows – “Lost” and “Heroes” have similarly intense fan bases, which love nothing more than to minutely analyze every plot point and critique the smallest character development. (By the way, both critics and fans cheered the 2007 announcement that “Lost” would end its run after 48 more episodes. How and when those episodes will roll out after the strike ends is still a matter of speculation, however.)

Being a “Lost” fan is “almost like being back in college, because there’s always some sort of philosophical, scientific or theological debate going on between the die-hard ‘Lost’ fans that really gets you thinking,” said Heather Gallay, a fan from Boston.

But like other “Lost” fans I communicated with recently via e-mail, she said some elements of fandom can take things too far. “I suppose what I like least is that sometimes people take it all too seriously and get too intense -- particularly [among] the ‘shippers,’ the term for fans that enjoy a particular romantic pairing,” Gallay said.

Though she wasn’t pleased with some “sloppy” treatment of the show’s characters in Season 3, a fan named Claudia said that her biggest problem with “Lost” last year was the “stalling and dragging the plot along with massive amounts of filler.”

“Overall, the season was very inconsistent, with some high highs and some abysmal lows, but I love my show and can't wait to have it back,” Claudia added.

What these fans said they didn’t want was a show that changed direction due to feedback from the denizens of message boards. “Pandering to the audience on a regular basis would be horribly destructive to the show,” she said.

“They shouldn’t feel like they need to explain themselves, but we appreciate that they do their weekly podcasts and try to clear things up,” a fan named L. Smith noted. “Judging by the amount of snarky comments from those two, I’d say they enjoying jerking the fans’ chains and I enjoy listening to them do it. But then I’m one of the few that actually understands that I am just fan, that they don’t owe me answers and they don’t have to be upfront and honest about things if they don’t want to be.”

Though that feedback, though harsh at times, can be useful, Lindelof added that there’s no chance that the show will change its storytelling to accommodate the demands of fans or critics.

“You always come back to, ‘What do I think is cool?’ Because we are all geeks and fanboys ourselves, so you have to hold yourself to the standard of what you think is cool and hope that other people share it,” Lindelof said. “You have to continue to take risks. Sometimes you go, ‘If this doesn’t work, it’ll be a huge disaster and the fans will hate us.’ But if you don’t take risks, the fans will say, ‘The story is moving too slow, and nothing exciting is happening.’”

Below is the edited text of my interview with Lindelof.

Do you think your show gets more scrutiny than other shows, and that it’s more extreme scrutiny?

“I think it’s hard to gauge because it feels more extreme to me, because ‘Lost’ is a show that I’m writing and have a very personal connection to. But when I read the comments on [the Web site] Ain’t It Cool for other shows that I like, it feels like they can be equally brutal.

“Especially with ‘Heroes,’ which I am a fan of. I became entrenched in the DNA of that show, just because very early on, I feel, the producers -- Tim [Kring] and the other writers for that show – were besieged by the critics and the fans alike who were saying, how is your show not going to be like ‘Lost’?

“Because by the time ‘Heroes’ came along, ‘Lost’ had already done two seasons. People were sort of at a frustration point, feeling like the mysteries weren’t being resolved at a fast enough pace, etc. Tim basically said, Our show is not going to be like ‘Lost,’ we’re going to answer questions very, very quickly.

“That basically started a dialogue amongst the fans and the critics on the ‘Heroes’-vs.-‘Lost’ of it all. Which I feel is to the detriment of both shows. It’s not fair to either show to compare the two. It’s like comparing ‘CSI: NY’ to ‘Criminal Minds.’ I don’t know why [‘Lost’ and ‘Heroes’] have been pitted against each other. Is it because they have certain similarities? I don’t know.”

I think part of it is that fans have made similar emotional investments in both shows, they feel committed to the shows in this passionate way. And so when they feel either show disappoints them, they take it personally.

“Of course.”

It’s great to have that bond – for creators and fans – but at the same time, when it goes bad, it goes very bad. It’s like, surely people don’t get this worked up about “Deal or No Deal.” And I don’t discount myself from that equation – I get worked up too, both positively and negatively, about shows I feel strongly about.

“Well at a certain point, a television show is no longer your show. I’m the parent of a 15-month old and we’re starting to see his personality develop. And you go, ‘Wow, he’s my son, but he’s his own man.’

“The show no longer belongs to the people who are writing it and performing it and directing it. It belongs to the fans just as much. They feel and are entitled to say, ‘Jack would never say that,’ ‘Kate would never do that.’ They take possession of the show and the characters on the show because those characters are spending time in their house every week, in their living room.”

But there’s not just one faction saying “Do this.” For any show, there are various camps and factions about what should and shouldn’t be done with characters and stories. Do you ever just throw up your hands and go, “Agggh!”

“It’s a Catch-22. You want to please all the fans, and then you realize you can’t please all the fans.”

So what do you do? When you’re in the writers’ room, and you know there are 70 opinions about Locke or Kate or whatever, what do you come back to in terms of guidance?

“You always come back to, ‘What do I think is cool?’ Because we are all geeks and fanboys ourselves, so you have to hold yourself to the standard of what you think is cool and hope that other people share it.

“And sometimes the idea gets executed just right. Like with the finale, it was like, we knew we had this very bold idea, which was, we knew that we were going to start using flash-forwards in the show, but is it time to do it now? In the finale? We’ll actually Trojan-horse it like it’s a flashback.

“We could pull that off in an hourlong episode, but it’s like the wheelchair with Locke, at a certain point you go, ‘Why is he sitting down in this flashback?’ So you can probably get away with it for three or four scenes before people smell a rat.

“So it was like, how could we get away with it [in the finale], how would we design it, what are the distractions, like the coffin, the suicide attempt, that you can couch the idea in.

“Other times you have ideas that are cool ideas but in the execution of them are horrible. Like the Others having a funeral for one of their own. You go, ‘That’d be cool if they wear these cool tunics and you realize they have these rituals that are sort of very pagan.’ Then you watch that on film an you go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Let us edit it down to its barest essentials and get the hell out. It’s just bizarre.’”

It didn’t work.

“No, it didn’t. But when you have the idea, you think it’s cool. So I feel like the fans are not judging the idea, they’re judging the execution of the idea. You can’t allow the fans to edit [the writing process]. You have to continue to take risks. Sometimes you go, ‘If this doesn’t work, it’ll be a huge disaster and the fans will hate us.’ But if you don’t take risks, the fans will say, ‘The story is moving too slow, and nothing exciting is happening.’”

So is it a constant battle to balance the character stuff versus moving the story forward? Or have you developed a rhythm with that?

“No, the rhythm is completely changed now. There’s a lot of curiosity [about the new season on both sides, from the writers and the fans]. For the first time ever, I really don’t know how the fans and the public at large are going to absorb the new season. I really can’t tell you, because it’s so different.

“It’s not a different show, but the whole paradigm of the show [has changed]. Every week it was like, ‘Here’s a conflict on the island and here’s something about this character that helps explain why they’re acting this way or what’s motivating them.’ It was more emotional -- [the flashbacks] were never plotty. The flashback stories always were, Carlton likes to say, these little New Yorker short stories. They had a beginning, a middle and an end. ‘This is the time that Kate got caught in Australia, this is the time that Sawyer decided to stop conning, this is the time that Locke went on walkabout, this is the time that Jack ratted out his dad.’

“Now, when you talk about doing flash-forwards on the show, the paradigm shifts entirely, because you’re showing the audience A, which is, they’re on the island, and you’re showing them Z, which is, they’re off the island. But the audience doesn’t know B through Y.

“So when you watch the flash-forwards, there’s an emotional component, but you’re also completely engaged on a plot level, because you’re like, ‘How did they get here?’ Every little sentence they say is a clue to what B through Y may be. You have to watch the show in an entirely different fashion.

“I think it’s great, and exciting for us as writers, because we were so sick of writing flashback stories. So we’ve changed the paradigm of the show, but in doing so, it’s a fairly new world in terms of how it’s going to be watched. My fundamental thinking is, half the people are going to think it’s great, and half the people are going to say, ‘This is not the “Lost” that I know and love, and I want it to go back to being the way that it was.’ And of course those will be the same people who were kvetching about the flashbacks being boring.”

So you said something interesting at Comic-Con last summer [more on that here], that flashbacks are going the way of the dodo. Are they gone?

“No, they’re not.”

Will it be a gradual transition to more flash-forwards?

“I don’t really want to say. I feel like, what the new rules are that the show plays by – [figuring that out] is going to be part of the fun of the new season. All I’ll say is, we’re done telling flashback stories that are not relevant to the uber-story of the island.”

One flashback I loved was Claire’s flashback to what happened when she was kidnapped on the island. Also Ben’s flashback to his own history on the island, that was cool.

“Or Juliet’s. She still has some chapters left in her story. It’s all a matter of how you want to tell it. I’ll just say again, we’re not done with flashbacks, but the flashbacks we want to do and are doing are relevant on a story level to the macro story of ‘Lost.’”

Just going back to the ownership that fans feel for their favorite shows. From Day 1, you guys have really put yourself out there and interacted with fans and made it a point to address or acknowledge their concerns. But I know for myself – I really enjoy having a Web site where people can comment and so forth, but once in a while it’s like, “Wow, online commenter, you just hurt my feelings.” That doesn't happen much – most people are cool – but still. Are there those times you just feel like, “Ouch”?

“Yeah. And that’s taken some getting used to. But I think it comes with the territory. But when you consider the alternative – which is that nobody cares…. The first year of the show, we experienced this [great response], we were kind of untouchable. [There was] the idea that people were sort of bored with TV, along came ‘Lost’ and ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and people were excited about it again.

“When something is new… it’s like when you’re dating someone that you’re in love with for the first time. But the second year of your relationship, you’re like, ‘They pick their nose a lot.’ The reality is, they were always picking their nose, but you were under that haze of new love.

“So the longer our relationship goes on, the more critical it becomes, that’s sort of the nature of the beast. When it’s at it’s most critical is when it ends, which is why ‘Sopranos’ and ‘Seinfeld’ – the series finale of any show will create the loudest and fiercest emotional outpouring.

“The thing about our show, that’s different from say Joss [Whedon’s] shows, is that his shows always seemed to be fighting against, ‘Will it come back next year?’ You couldn’t be too hard on it because you knew that your viewership and support – the show was dependent on that for its survival. But because our show is a hit, it allows the fans to come at it no holds barred, gloves off, because it’s like ‘What we say won’t hurt your show. It will only influence it to be better.’

“And truth be told, the fan feedback has actually made the show better. The fact that we know that we’ll get crucified if we do a [crappy] job is a very motivating in the world. It’s not always the most constructive criticism in the world, but sometimes it’s good to hear.

“We knew that the ‘Jack flying a kite in Thailand’ episode was not great, but when fans said, ‘This is terrible and I’m going to stop watching the show’ – if they had said, ‘This wasn’t so bad,’ it might have made us lazy. ‘Well, we got away with the Jack-Thailand episode, so…’

“Those are frustrating episodes, because again, conceptually, you think, that could be cool. This was Jack trying to drop out. And did we miscast Bai Ling? Probably. Was that the wrong flashback story considering the island story was Jack locked in a cage? It was episode nine and we’re still in the cages? We also miscast the woman who was the sheriff of the Others. So it’s these cool ideas [that stumble in the execution].”

Are there times when people are nuts for a character or a story is a hit with fans, and you go, “Yes, we’ll do more of that.”

“Yes, of course. But again, you [already] know whether it works or not. I can’t think of any instance where we thought we did something awesome and the fans hated it, or we thought we messed up and the fans thought it was great. We’re our own harshest critics.

“Sometimes the fans can isolate a problem in a way that we can’t because our noses are right up against it. They can give us perspective as to why it sucks. But they’ve never told us ‘It sucks!’ and we’re like [surprised], ‘It does?’

“With the finale … we were so up against it [regarding time pressures, because it was the end of the season]. We broke the story and had it up on our whiteboard. And we had [Hawaii-based executive producer and director] Jack Bender and our [assistant director] fly to L.A. and we pitched them the finale so they could start prepping. When you’re doing 24 episodes a year, that’s what it comes down to. He was prepping a show based on what we had verbally told him, we didn’t have time to do an outline. He was like, ‘OK, on Wednesday we’re shooting that scene you pitched us.’ So we wrote that scene.

“We knew the story was awesome, but the script was written completely haphazardly. It wasn’t until we got into the editing room that we all started looking at each other and going, ‘This is going to work – in a huge way.’ When Kate gets out of that car, it either works or it doesn’t. The audience is either going to go, ‘What?’ or they’re going to go, ‘Huh?’ And you never want them to go ‘Huh?’”

What’s your take on all the spoilers that float around? Obviously I try to get that stuff sometimes, because it can be fun to have a scoop and it can drive traffic to the Web site, but are there times you’re just like, ‘I wish this or that wasn’t out there yet?’ Or is it an aspect of your job to dole out spoilers in just the right increments?

“It’s tough. Protecting the secrets of the show has become – you can’t govern it. It has to be governed by the people who are putting it out there. The last Harry Potter book came out, and it took me a month to read it, and it wasn’t spoiled for me. [The ending] wasn’t out there unless I went looking for it.

“The problem is, once you read [the ending], you feel like you’re in the club. But the problem is, in advance of reading it, you don’t know what you’ve got. Last week on [E! TV columnist] Kristin [Dos Passos’] site, she put something on her site that she might have thought was a fairly innocuous thing, in the context of the third episode of the season. I wrote her an e-mail that said, ‘Just so you know, I’m not telling you what to do with this, but that is a huge spoiler for the season.’

“It’s like, you don’t know what you’ve got there, because you haven’t read the scripts and you haven’t seen the episode, so you don’t know how huge it is. Then it was up to her to decide what she wanted to do with it. I just have to hope that the people posting spoilers are fans. But when they don’t have context – what are you going to do?”

I think spoilers have become a form of currency in the Internet age. But I think most sites that I respect – and I hope I do this – give people a warning before they reach any spoilery material. I think there have been a few times that I haven’t given adequate warning, and I feel bad about that. But then again, it’s also really hard to even discuss shows any more. When the network sends you several episodes for review before the season begins, what should the press reveal? What should we not reveal? Some people love clues and spoilers, some people hate it if even the tiniest plot point is discussed in a review. It’s challenging to balance the demands of all that.

“If a revelation came out about Obama, the reporter from the Washington Post would call the campaign and say, ‘I’m going to run this, do you want to comment?’ [In that kind of situation] I could at least give [the writer] context. And I would create an environment where I feed her [information] that would not be bogus.

“Because right now when I read on a spoiler site a bad piece of information, I never reach out and say, ‘You’ve got bad information.’ We never put out purposely false information. The only thing we do is, we put out false [scene] breakdowns which give the names of characters. Because from the breakdowns people were getting, ‘Oh, this is clearly a Desmond episode because they’re looking for British people.’ Or a Charlie episode. So we had to try to be clever about that.”

So you’ve got to spend time dealing with all this stuff – putting things out there in the press, trying to address fan concerns, all of those things.

“Yeah. Because of the Internet and because of fan response, the entire game has become very political. Which is very odd. The idea that Entertainment Weekly runs a review of the new season of ‘Heroes’ that is unfavorable, then two weeks later, Tim Kring has a rebuttal in EW, which is a mea culpa explaining point by point everything they said in the review, but also saying, ‘Watch these next episodes’ – that’s politics.

“The fact that that outreach exists, that on the boards, everybody is like, ‘Oh, I hear that Tim is apologizing.’ Think about David Milch apologizing for the surfing show [‘John From Cincinnati’]. He would never do it. It’s insulting to a writer to apologize for your work. That’s the kind of writer he is – David Milch is like, ‘If you didn’t get it, [too bad].’”

But you guys have come out and said at times – “That wasn’t executed as well as it could have been. Mistakes were made,” that kind of thing.

“‘Mistakes were made,’ yeah, you have to. That is part of having an ongoing dialogue with your fan base. They demand that of you.”

So do you think Tim Kring’s EW rebuttal was a matter of playing politics?

“No, I think it was honest and sincere. I think he felt like, he shared the feelings of the fan base and wanted them to know he wasn’t sitting over here thinking he was Michaelangelo.

“Also, it gets personal. If you go and you read the boards, like on Ain’t It Cool if there’s a bad episode of ‘Heroes,’ the fans are like, ‘Kring, you are an idiot!’

“Wow. First off, Tim created ‘Heroes’ but there’s a writing staff of 10. And Carlton and I get it as well. We’re almost like candidates who are running for office, and the office we’re running for is, ‘Will you watch our show? Cast your votes.’ People can threaten, ‘I’m going to stop watching your show.’ That’s like saying, ‘I’m not going to vote for you, I’m going to vote for the other guy,’ and the other guy is ‘Criminal Minds.’”

So it's kind of like, you've got to be out in front of fan management and...

“Defending the show.”

Yeah, defending the show. And it’s interesting – there have always been fandoms out there, and “The X-Files” and “Alias” and “Buffy” and other cult shows have obviously had vocal online communities for years and years. But now it’s very much expected in the fan communities that writers have to listen to them – “You are answerable to me, Kring.”

“And it’s not just the fans, it’s the critics who carry water to the fans. And I think the best critics are fans. That is to say, they approach their job as a fan. That doesn’t mean they like it or dislike [a particular show], but they’re fans of television.

“So you were at last year’s [‘Lost’ session at the critic’s press tour - more on that here] in January – I felt like it was a Senate hearing. When Alan Sepinwall started firing up on us, I literally expected the [TV] graphic of ‘Sepinwall, Newark, R’ [like you’d see in a congressional hearing]. It was unbelievable.” [UPDATE: Alan posted the relevant passages from that memorable press tour Q+A session on his blog.]

I was the one [sarcastically] suggesting a flashback of Jin’s high school reunion.

[laughs] “That was a good one.”

But you don’t understand – the thing about that session, everybody said that was a really good session. People cared. The critics in the room were really engaged. That’s not always the case.

“I know. Sepinwall is great. He’s just a pain in my [butt].” [laughs]

But it’s funny to think about – did showrunners 20 years ago even have to engage the press more than once or twice a year? Did anyone outside the industry even know who these people were, or care?

“I’m a big football fan, and when I was younger I always wondered, why do they make the losing football team go in front of the press? Why do they force that guy to do that? He’s walking a slippery slope, because he has to protect the team and he has to protect himself. He can’t say, ‘Well, I had a crappy game plan.’ All he can say is, ‘Something went wrong between what I thought was a good game plan and the execution of that game plan. We’re going to try again next week.’

“That’s exactly the same thing we’re out there trying to do. We’re the coaches and our team is ‘Lost.’ Comic-Con was a blast this year because we were coming off the finale, and we had Harold [Perrineau] coming back.”

But in one of your first responses to a question, you said, “You’re all being too nice. Where is that person who’s going to ask the question that makes me stay up all night for months on end?”

“Yeah, because the year before that, the first guy who came up to the microphone launched into a diatribe about how [crappy] the show was. And I was like, ‘And yet, you’re here.’ And my job is to keep filling this room each year. I’ll know that I’ve stopped doing my job when the room is only half full. If I’ve made you angry about the show, at least you’re still watching it.

“I’ve never purposely made a bad episode. But there are bad episodes – the show has ‘jumped the shark’ so many times now that the phrase has lost all meaning. But the reality is, as long as there’s an engaged fan base to debate about it…”

I think, for me anyway, if a show has, over the course of a season or two of three, earned my trust and gotten me to respect its storytelling, it takes a lot to get me to the point where I say, “OK, I’m done watching. I’m off the bus.” If I’m a fan of a show, I expect that there will be lulls where all is not perfect. But then sometimes you wonder, “Am I being conned here?”

“Where the line gets blurry is – I feel the best critics are the best writers. That is to say, like Matt Roush [of TV Guide], they can take what they’ve just seen and express it in a way that is fun to read. But when a critic is a very good writer, when the critic is critiquing writing itself – it’s very easy for writer-producers to go, ‘This critic is now telling me they could do it better.’ I feel the worst critics are saying, ‘Here’s what I would do.’ Or ‘Here’s what they should do.’

“The problems speak for themselves. It’s doubly frustrating for me to read it when it’s like, ‘Duh, I know Nicki and Paulo were a mistake. I know. Stop rubbing it in my face.’ But that’s the nature of the beast. That’s your job. Your title is not ‘the cheerleaders,’ it’s ‘the critics.’”

Star Foreced to Abandon Blog...

Lost star Jorge Garcia has revealed that he abandoned a blog because bosses were concerned that he would reveal the show's secrets.

Fans of the hit US series have been kept in the dark about upcoming storylines and took to trawling the 34-year-old's online posts for information.

Garcia, who plays Hugo 'Hurley' Reyes in the ABC drama, said: "I started a blog at one point, and it kind of scared people involved with the show.

"Anything that I'd write, they knew that people would read into it and try to figure out what it meant."

Not that I know of, but we do learn a lot more about Juliet's romantic past, as well as meet one of Sayid's lady friends. The ladies love Sayid, what can I tell you?

Mike in London: Some people claim you can see the parachutist—who was seemingly killed by Locke at the end of season three—alive and well in the trailer. So, did she survive or not?
She's mostly dead. (Think Princess Bride: "It just so happens that your friend here is only mostly dead. There is a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive...") But her being mostly dead doesn't mean we're done with her story. There's at least one mystery about Naomi left to solve.

Jane in Los Angeles: I'm dying to know what's in store for Desmond in season four. Do you know anything?
Look for more trouble from Desmond's rotten almost father-in-law. I talked to Alan Dale at the SAGs, and he's back as Charles Widmore in two of the first eight episodes of Lost this season. He told me, "I can tell you that I continue to be an absolute asshole to Desmond. I love that they keep coming up with ways I can do that. But Henry's [Ian Cusick] a lovely guy, and I enjoy doing that show." No matter how much I begged, Alan wouldn't divulge the other ep he's guesting on. Got a good guess? Post it in the Comments!

LOST is Back with new episodes (Spoilers)...

ABC's Lost is back and not a moment too soon for television watchers that have tired of reruns. Wednesday, the network will show everyone's favorite recap episode to get us all up to speed from last season (who can remember what even happened?). ABC must get this as they are airing some sort of a pop up video type Wednesday special where they will not only give us the last episode but running test as well explaining - well who knows what it will be explaining.

Thursday will kick off the first new episode of the year. And of course there are plenty of spoilers running the gamut and this one comes from the National Enquirer. The magazine is usually quite reliable with leaks from the set so if you don't want to know what might happen stop reading now or don't bother complaining later.

Still reading? According to the magazine, "In a riveting new episode scheduled to run this season, murderer and turncoat Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau) pins a suicide note to himself for son Walt (Malcolm David Kelley) to find – and then deliberately crashes his car."

According to the report some of the castaways will do anything to get off that island, but Michael ends up surviving the wreck. Michael “wants off the island so badly he comes close to killing himself,” a “Lost” insider told The Enquirer. “It’s a very emotional scene – especially when he pins the suicide note to his chest – and then wrecks his car.”

The 44-year-old actor – who portrayed Augusta Hill on HBO’s “Oz” – hasn’t been seen on the cult series since he vanished from the mysterious island at the end of season two.

“But he was once one of the busiest characters on the island,” said the insider. “He killed Ana-Lucia and Libby and then went on to betray Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley – turning them over to "The Others" in trade for his son and a means to escape.” Michael and Walt were last seen leaving the island on a shoddy little boat – and viewers were left wondering if they’d survive.

“This new episode clarifies their fate, and it’s bound to have ‘Lost’ theories, like TheTailSection.com, have been buzzing for weeks about a suicide plot line.

“Everyone was speculating about which male character committed suicide and whose funeral Jack flashbacks to,” the source said. “They speculated it was Michael’s death. But he ends up recovering in a hospital.”

During the third-season finale of ABC's "Lost," a flash-forward revealed that Jack, the hunky doctor, and Kate, the equally foxy fugitive, make it off the mysterious island of polar bears, smoke monsters, hidden hatches and secretive people called the Others.

But all is not well. A bearded and clearly distraught Jack was seen pleading, "We have to go back, Kate!"

Back to that crazy place? Viewers know just how he feels. "Lost" returns with eight new episodes starting Thursday, and anticipation is building among fans who want to get back to the action and finally find some meaningful answers to what the heck is going on with the addictively complex drama.

Last season's stunning flash-forward device was hailed as a genius stroke for a series that was struggling creatively and trying the patience of all but the most devoted watchers. "Lost" has found its way again, prompting a new sense of excitement that's bigger than the weird four-toed statue that popped up not too long ago.

What do you need to know before you book your one-way ticket back to this time-bending drama? Let's briefly go down the hatch of what's already happened on and off the screen, and what's in store.

Hooray for the future. Ever since Oceanic 815 crashed back in 2004, "Lost" has been an innovative series with a labyrinthine puzzle the likes of which broadcast television hadn't seen before.

But during the end of the second season and a good chunk of the third, the show strayed perilously close to jumping the shark. Too many unanswered questions piled up. Constant flashbacks to the survivors' past lives began to feel like padding, not canny plotting.

Then came the flash-forward finale that reinvigorated the show and indicated producers knew exactly where the story was headed -- right off the island, shockingly enough. It opened the door for future episodes to jump intriguingly back and ahead in time, a wrinkle nobody saw coming.

"It completely changed the face of 'Lost,' " says Jeff Jensen, senior writer for Entertainment Weekly and the "Doc Jensen" blogger for the magazine's Web site. "We suddenly realized this story is so much bigger than we thought."

The plot twist busted open the show's whole mythology and rebooted the series for the better, says Sandra Deane, senior editor at AOL Television.

"People were excited and blown away," she says. "Everybody had been saying for a while, oh, we're so sick of the flashbacks. We've got everybody's backstory. We're over it. Move on, already." Now the buzz over the show is so intense, it's luring back some fans who had drifted away.

Yes, there is an end in sight. When a show is a hit, it can drag on longer than it should (witness the interminable "ER"). That's why some "Lost" fans worried there'd be years of cooked-up excuses for keeping Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley and the gang in island limbo.

Then last year, ABC agreed to let the show's executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse do what makes the most creative sense: set an end date for the series. Under the deal, there'll be 48 more episodes divvied into three seasons of 16 each (or that was the plan before the writers' strike).

With the conclusion looming in 2010, the team behind "Lost" can now attempt to plot out the action better and ensure that every little moment counts towards a strong, artistically satisfying resolution, instead of, as Jensen notes, "the usual m.o. of TV, which is just to feed the beast, keep it on the air, keep it interesting for one more week."

In the big picture, "Lost" also could encourage networks to do more bold experiments with limited-run series. The "Lost" makers "continue to change the culture of TV watching and I think it is evolving toward a place that can give us more meaningful television and more meaningful artistic expression within the broadcast realm, as opposed to just HBO or Showtime," says Jensen.

And now for the new stuff. As "Lost" resumes, there are obvious questions left by the peek into the future. Who else gets off the island? How do they do it? Who's left behind? Why is Jack so messed up and eager to return? Who was in the coffin shown in the finale? Who's the male person that Kate apparently lives with?

But the fate of the island's present storyline is also a delicious riddle. When last season wrapped, there was hope of imminent rescue by a freighter, something the unreliable Others leader Ben was warning the castaways against. Jack wants to go. Locke wants to stay. Who's on that ship and are they dangerous or not?

According to Jensen, at least in the first four episodes, it should be pretty clear what's happening, which isn't always the case with "Lost." And early on, viewers are likely to meet several new characters. Teeny-tiny spoiler alert: TV Guide says there'll be a foursome of freighter people introduced, and there also should be more information coming this season about who else leaves the island, with one of them revealed during the premiere.

What about the writers' strike? The Hollywood labor dispute has intensified interest in "Lost," since there's not much else exciting on broadcast TV these days (not even the predictably awful audition rounds of "American Idol").

There are eight episodes of "Lost" in the can. The original plan was to show 16 new episodes without repeats, according to Variety, to create the sort of event feeling that seasons of "24" do. But that was announced before the strike.

If the conflict is settled by the end of this month and production starts back up, Jensen's hunch is there'll be a break of a few weeks after the first eight episodes air, followed by the airing of six or eight more episodes. But a longer strike could make it difficult to get a full season done in time.

Never seen it? Now's the time. During the long stretch of the writers strike, some viewers have been catching up with "Lost" through DVDs and are primed for the fourth season, says AOL's Deane.

If you don't have time for a DVD deep dive or to check out some episodes at ABC's Web site (abc.com), the network is rerunning an enhanced version of the Season Three finale at 9 p.m. Wednesday and an hour-long recap an hour before Thursday's 9 p.m. season premiere.

Also at ABC's Web site, there's a nifty 8-minute, 15-second recap (as in Oceanic 815) that jams three seasons worth of highlights into a rat-tat-tat montage with a clipped, deadpan narration.

And, of course, there are a bunch of unofficial fan sites on the Web to rummage through, since "Lost" fans love to share their theories and chat online.

Just beware the spoilers, which are widespread on the Web, if not always reliable. Says Deane, who tries to live in a spoiler-free zone, "What you think you might know might not even be real."

That philosophy applies to "Lost" in general. Don't trust where you think the show is going, at least not yet. But enjoy it all the same.

Lost is back and we want answers. After last season's nail biting finale when Jack and Kate were seen on US soil and crucially off the island, we want to know how they escaped Ben's evil clutches and did the other Lostaways manage to escape too?

Not surprisingly the show's cast have been very cagey about what we can expect from the new series. However Michael Emerson (Ben) did tantalise us with a few revelations. "More blood, more beatings and more violence" are promised as well as some new adversaries joining the Lostaways.

Creator Damon Lindelof has confirmed that Michael (Harold Perrineau) will be back this season – but what about son Walt? Meanwhile a pregnant Sun's fate hangs in the balance.

Will we find out who's in the coffin? Will Hurley ever lose weight? And will the producers answer womens' prayers everywhere by giving us more gratuitous semi-naked shots of Sawyer?

Only one way to find out…

What ever happened to VH1's Pop-Up Video? That show seemed to have such a short shelf life, yet it was endlessly fun to watch music videos while minutiae about the artist or song popped up on the screen. How else would I have learned about the behind the scenes antics that took place while Michael Jackson filmed the video for "Bad"? I'm guessing that Pop-Up Video had to be banished into oblivion due to the fact that music networks no longer play music videos, but I keep on hoping that it'll somehow make a comeback.

In a way, the people at ABC have answered my prayers by taking the pop-up concept and applying it to one of their most popular shows. At the end of January, viewers will be able to watch a classic Lost episode with facts, clues, and helpful back story popping up on the lower third of the screen. The network is hoping that Lost fans will tune in for the pop-up curiosity, while the handy facts will help new viewers get initiated into the series.

On Wednesday, January 30 at 9pm, ABC will broadcast the enhanced version of Lost's epic season 3 finale, "Through the Looking Glass." The network doesn't often rerun the series due to its complicated serialized nature, so this may be a one of a kind event. However, if the pop-up gimmick draws in enough curious viewers, maybe they'll try this out with more Lost episodes or reruns of another series.

While I could see the pop-up factoids being an annoying distraction for new viewers, I think it'd be a fun thing to check out for those of us who are die hard Lost fans. Or maybe that's just the Pop-Up Video lover in me talking.

NEW YORK - Are the island castaways of "Lost" mere hours from rescue? Or will their latest chance at freedom turn to dust, like all the others?

That's a no-brainer. The title of the ABC series isn't "Found." And as the long-awaited new season of "Lost" begins Thursday (9 p.m. EST on CTV), the first episode strongly suggests the castaways are about to lose again.

They're awaiting help from a rescue party from a freighter anchored offshore. But as they wait, the chilling likelihood takes hold that their potential saviors could instead spell their doom.

There are no shockers in the episode, the first of eight in the series' truncated fourth season. But this is a gripping hour involving all the principal characters that sets the stage for the season ahead. And after eight long months' absence, it's a welcome sight. (Relax: No spoilers ahead.)

From last season's finale, we already know that rock star Charlie (played by Dominic Monaghan) made a perilous quest to disable a jamming device that had prevented the group from summoning help from a just-acquired satellite telephone. He died carrying out his mission, but not before relaying a warning to his comrades to beware of the so-called freighter people.

The next step in the rescue plan was for the group to make a trek to the radio tower and shut off a tape-loop rescue plea that also was interfering with any other transmissions.

There Ben (Michael Emerson), the less-than-trustworthy overlord of the Others, implored Jack (Matthew Fox), the survivors' reluctant leader, not to place the call to the freighter people.

Jack sneered at Ben's words. The call was made and the new episode begins, much as last season's finale did, with Jack somewhere in the future - drinking. With this recently added flash-forward storytelling feature, Jack is seen in his Los Angeles kitchen mixing a morning cocktail when his eye falls on TV coverage of police in hot pursuit of a speeding motorist.

The car crashes and the driver is arrested. Jack realizes it's one of his fellow former castaways, who is haunted by the past and sees visions of the dead. Jack, who himself is plagued by substance abuse,unrequited love for Kate (Evangeline Lily), and other demons, pays this person a visit. There is mention of a dreaded secret they share.

In a scene back on the island (and back in time), the portly Hurley (Jorge Garcia) runs into Locke (Terry O'Quinn), who long ago had "gone native" and has no desire to ever leave the island.

"It's gonna be hard to talk (Jack) into thinking they're not coming here to rescue us," says Hurley, who, with Locke, shares Ben's alarm for what the freighter people might do.

"We're just gonna have to try our best," says Locke, "because if we can't talk him out of it, then Charlie died for nothing."

By the end of the hour, the castaways are split into two factions - those aligned with Ben and Locke who believe the freighter people represent a mortal threat and Jack's group, still holding out hope for rescue, even as they start to fear the worst.

Thursday's new episode will be preceded by "Lost: Past, Present & Future," a recap hour of the saga of the Oceanic flight 815 crash (8 p.m. EST). And Wednesday, last season's splendid two-hour finale will be repeated (9 p.m. EST on ABC) in "enhanced" form, with on-screen text containing commentary and clues.

In short, "Lost" fans should be rejoicing. And even with just eight episodes currently on tap thanks to the writers strike, ABC has promised another 40 will eventually follow, leading up to the series' finale in 2010.

I worked as an extra on Lost for the 8th episode of the upcoming 4th season,and I can confirm that it is a Michael-centric episode that takes place between the time he left up until present time on the island. I was one of the extras in NY where Michael ends up and meets Tom. On the set there was a lot of talk about how Tom could be there and there were the theories of the Orchid going around.

Viewers will have to decide whether Lost is half-empty or half-full when the ABC adventure-drama returns for its fourth season Thursday (9 ET/PT). Because of the Hollywood writers' strike, only eight of 16 planned episodes have been produced.

Cast members say that ABC's decision to provide some Lost rather than none is smart and that they are pleased with a quickened pace and more answers to Lost's mysteries.

"We're all going to be disappointed that there are only eight instead of 16, but the eight episodes are amazing, and I think fans will be very satisfied," says Yunjin Kim, who plays Sun, the pregnant wife of Jin (Daniel Dae Kim). "I feel like this season all the episodes are self-contained. The speed of the story is faster. Each episode contains a question and an answer, finally. So there's a lot of satisfaction."

That approach may be the result of the unusual decision to set an end date for a hit series, with 48 episodes over three seasons. Knowing when the story concludes (which may be reflected in the title of the one-hour season-opener, "The Beginning of the End") has helped writers map out a faster, more focused pace, says Matthew Fox, who plays Jack Shephard, the reluctant leader of the survivors of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815.

"Lost is a story with a beginning and an end. Knowing he's got 48, (co-creator Damon Lindelof) can make each installment move the narrative forward to that conclusion with momentum," Fox says.

Based on Lost's previous production schedule, five or six more episodes likely could be produced by the end of May if the writers' strike is settled by mid-February.

Lost ended last May with a jolt, opening the door to the castaways' possible rescue while adding a twist, a first flash-forward after three seasons of signature character flashbacks.

•The island update: Hurley (Hugo Reyes) saved three survivor colleagues from the Others, a mysterious island group at odds with the Oceanic passengers. Jack contacted an offshore freighter, and he and other stranded island dwellers were waiting for its crew to rescue them. And, just before drowning, another colleague, Charlie (Dominic Monaghan), passed on the message that the boat people weren't who the islanders thought.

That leads to a big season-opening question, one that will divide the islanders as four strangers arrive: Are they coming to hurt or to help?

•The future revelation: In a surprise directional change praised by cast and TV critics, Lost's May finale looked ahead to find that Jack and Kate (Evangeline Lilly), and possibly some others from the island, made it back to civilization.

The episode ended with a bearded, substance-abusing Jack raising more questions by imploring Kate: "We were not supposed to leave. … We have to go back, Kate."

Other questions hover: Who will leave the island, and who will stay? What will become of the pregnant Sun on an island where expectant mothers die? How will the romantic possibilities play out? Of course, Lost's big questions — what and where is the island, and why are these people there? — remain. (ABC will repeat the two-hour finale Wednesday at 9 ET/PT and air a series recap Thursday at 8.)

After averaging 15.9 million and 15.4 million viewers in its first two years, Lost fell to 13.8 million last season. (Lost is the top show in time-shifted viewing, ABC says.)

A complex, serialized show such as Lost loses some of its audience via attrition, but many viewers and critics blamed a six-episode fall 2006 arc they say had too much of the Others, not enough of the first-year regulars and too little in the way of action and answers.

A longer episode allotment in the spring received a much better critical response, and the season finale (13.9 million viewers) gave Lost its largest audience in more than three months. That led to the decision to run its 16 episodes consecutively this season.

But if this season also ends up divided, cast members say, the eight episodes will stand up better because they have lots of action and all the regulars are featured. (Lost's writers would not discuss the season because of the strike; ABC execs declined to be interviewed.)

Elizabeth Mitchell, who plays Juliet, one of the Others, likens the literature-referencing series to a novel. "I'm reading this book, Orley Farm. The first 150 pages are all setup. You're like, 'Where are the people I care about?' Then, all of a sudden, the book takes off. I feel that's what happened in Season 3. The writers laid their groundwork. And it hits the ground running" this season.

Lost could benefit from the strike, too, since there is less scripted competition. With time slots available because other shows have only reruns, it was moved from Wednesday, American Idol's regular night, to Thursday, and from 10 ET/PT to 9, an hour with more viewers.

In addition to new characters from the freighter, Michael (Harold Perrineau), who left the island with son Walt earlier, will return. Some on the island, most recently Locke (Terry O'Quinn) in the season finale, have seen a vision of Walt (Malcolm David Kelley).

Michael Emerson, who plays the spooky Others leader Ben, says that this season not only keeps up last season's momentum, but that the flash-forward opens great creative opportunities. "None of us knew what was going on until we saw the broadcast. I thought 'Hallelujah! This is going to make this show.' "

The future perspective is "how they're going to spin it out to be suspenseful and dramatic. Who has gotten off the island and at what price?" he says. "Now, there are these bittersweet notes of regret and missed opportunity that will come into play. To the extent the island was some crucible in which people could hope for redemption, maybe not everyone was redeemed, at least not happily."

Michael Emmerson Interview...

If the finale of season three of "Lost" seemed bleak for Michael Emerson's character, Ben Linus, who was left tied to a tree by the survivors of the wreckage of Flight 815 as they phoned an off-shore freighter for rescue, the actor said that season four will be worse.

How does Emerson define worse? More violence and fewer allies for his character, as the mysterious "freighter people" land on the island, a group that Ben, in season three, warned the survivors "will kill everyone on the island."

"I'd say season four will be far rougher than anything (Ben) has seen," Emerson said in a phone interview about the ABC-TV hit series about survivors of a plane crash and the mysterious supernatural island they are stuck on.

Emerson, as Linus, the apparent leader of the mysterious Others, ended last season on the brink of losing control of that group, after a failed raid on the survivors' beach results in an ambush, which left the raiding party dead. Flight 815 survivor John Locke (Terry O'Quinn) challenges Ben's authority by demanding an audience with Ben's boss, the even more mysterious Jacob.

In true Ben fashion, Emerson's character shoots Locke, leaving him in a ditch filled with the bodies of the failed Dharma Initiative, the research group that Ben orchestrated the deaths of, in conjunction with the island's inhabitants. Even Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell) has defected and is aiding the 815 survivors.

"The violence doesn't stop; it ramps up," Emerson said. "Ben is in dire straights. His army has disappeared; he doesn't have the loyalty of Juliet. It will be Ben living by his wits."

Season four will include Ben making some sort of pact with one of the splinter groups of the 815 survivors.

"He never really teams up in the conventional sense. He will, for convenience or leverage, do whatever he needs to do to further his agenda," Emerson said. "And because he is the great chess player, he's always eight to 10 moves ahead of everyone else."

Emerson is sure of one thing — Ben Linus will be part of the "Lost" story through season five.

"He's so deeply interwoven, I'm sure he's good until the end of the season. I'm gonna guess he's good to the end of the fifth season," Emerson said. "I should say this guardedly; they kill people off left and right."
More looks ahead

The new season also will see more use of the "flash forward," introduced at the end of season three to tell more of the story, he said.

"All that stuff that happens in the future becomes very poignant as season four goes along. We live in that world a lot more," he said. "Think of the possibilities that open up. We explore the expance of who does survive the island, and how and at what cost — those sorts of issues."

"Lost" fans also will learn more about the story of Alex (Tania Raymonde), daughter of the French explorer Danielle Rousseau (Mira Furlan), whose ship was wrecked on the mysterious island and gave birth to Alex, only to have the infant snatched by the Others days later.

The now-teenaged Alex calls Ben "dad," but Emerson isn't giving away whether Ben is her biological or step father.

"His relationship with Alex will be explored in much more detail and nuance in season four," he said.

Is he her biological father?

"That's a mystery," Emerson said.

Another mystery yet to be revealed to both Emerson and the audience is Jacob, the man who Ben tells Locke he answers to.

"I'm not sure who or what Jacob is. In two or three frames (in "The Man Behind the Curtain"), we did see somebody sitting in that chair," Emerson said. "On the (season three DVD) boxed set, I understand the scene is easier to see."

Another mystery he spoke about is who was in the coffin in the season finale during a "flash forward."

"I don't know (who it is). I think there is a more intriguing answer and a sadder answer than Ben," he said.

The actors also seem to know as little about future "Lost" episodes as viewers do.

"We'll get a script anywhere from three to seven days before we shoot the episode, and we don't know anything beyond that," Emerson said. "I don't know what's in the next episode or two beyond that."
From guest to regular

The role of the devious Ben started for Emerson two years ago this month, as a guest star. The role originally was a three-episode cameo as Henry Gale, an industrialist on a round-the-world balloon trip who crashed on the island and was captured by Rousseau and the Flight 815 survivors as a suspected "Other."

"I flew to Hawaii for first time two years ago . . . the following morning I was hanging from a tree in the jungle," Emerson said. "It was a whirlwind, going from the dead of winter in New York City to the steaming jungle of Oahu in 24 hours."

The role of Henry Gale/Ben Linus was offered to him on the strength of past TV work. Such offers are not common, he said.

"I wish I knew how I landed it. I played a variety of other damaged characters on lawyer and cop shows," Emerson said. "At the time it was three ("Lost') episodes. It seemed like a good one; it was an (story) arc. I had no idea it would turn into the rest of my career."

But it is a role which blossomed from the meek, seemingly victimized Henry Gale into the more sinister, calculating Ben.

Emerson said he has a simple approach to playing Ben.

"Ben is sort of in-the-present moment at all times. In a way, it's freeing," he said. "I don't have to worry about big story arcs or where it is going. I just have to worry about the story at hand."
Not like Ben

Those are modest words from a man who is a Shakespearean actor, has several Emmy nominations and has had parts on shows ranging from "The Practice" to the "X-Files," "Without a Trace" and "Law and Order" on the small screen, to a role in the horror film "Saw."

But Emerson insists that off camera, he's not like Ben. He's playing a part on an upcoming movie "Really? OK," which he calls a bittersweet comedy about a 10-year-old boy who wants to be a cheerleader. Emerson is the sympathetic neighbor next door, a role he thanks his wife, Carrie Preston, for.

"It's one my wife and partner produced over the summer, a sweet, quiet movie," he said. "I don't have a big part. This role couldn't be much more different than Ben."

"It's a Freudian nightmare. That was my dear wife lying in the jungle giving birth to little Ben," Emerson joked.

In real life, Emerson said there aren't a lot of characteristics he shares with Ben.

"I'm not a great planner and not a manipulator of people, which are all trademarks of Ben. I tend to be a cool person, a reasonable listener and not over emotional," he said.

"Something about Ben is satisfying for me to play. I get to live out a kind of fantasy."

Umm… I think that would be a spoiler. But, we have a twist with that, with it being a flash forward or a flash back, so I would rather keep it, ya know, secret for now. I think what’s interesting about our episode is because we deal with that. I’m not saying that ours is a flash forward. There’s a little twist to it.

In your recent “Missing Pieces” mobisode, it was indicated that there was sort of a romantic attraction between Michael and Sun. Is that something they were considering at the time Season One was being put together?

I definitely know that was sort of the route that they wanted to take. But then they… And the viewers also responded well with Sun and Jin, and they were rooting for… for ... like, for the only married couple on the island to work out their problems. So, I think, for sure, in the beginning, the writers were heading towards, ya know, Sun possibly leaving Jin, and ya know, starting a relationship with Michael, and having a, sort of a love triangle between the three of us. We did explore it, alot actually, but, but then, ya know, they decided to drop the whole love triangle between the three of us. So I guess that’s one of the things they they wanted to shoot, but never really got to it, because they felt like it wasn’t right for the story line. They just decided not to go with it. So, it was fun actually. For, ya know, for one of our mobisodes we actually went back and… ya know… I had to wear a wig, we, we got our woredrobe from… actually… beginning of season 2, and going back to it, it was fun, it was a fun experience.

This was supposed to be a very different story. Last September, on a hot and sticky Hawaiian morning, Lost's future was primed for takeoff. In a lush jungle clearing, city doc–turned–island leader Jack (Matthew Fox) was helping a grizzled new arrival named Lapidus (Jeff Fahey) load gear into something that, before eight months ago, fans figured they wouldn’t see until the final frame of the series: a freakin' helicopter.

The show's resident psychic, Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick), who predicted late last season that a chopper would whisk people away from the seemingly inescapable island, was suddenly demanding one of its precious few seats. And he was doing it loudly enough to draw attention from another newbie, Faraday (Jeremy Davies), who had until then been preoccupied with performing a mysterious island experiment. But before anybody went anywhere, there was some important business to settle.

"Did the Red Sox really win the Series?" Jack asked.

"Don't get me started," responded Lapidus, who may or may not intend to rescue the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. "I bleed Yankee blue."

And millions of devoted fans bleed Lost, which threw viewers the mother of all curveballs last May when, in the third-season finale, Jack flashed forward to a future when he and Kate (Evangeline Lilly) were off the blasted island. And a future in which Jack has a weird beard, a pill problem and an obsessive new mission: "We have to go back, Kate! We have to go baaack!"

The audacious reveal did precisely what Lost's dizzyingly inventive architects, executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, had hoped: blow our minds and make us forgive the season's uneven start and occasional missteps (Nikki and Paulo, anyone?). It also reenergized the cast of ABC's Emmy-winning drama. "I've not been that excited about the show since the pilot," Lilly said during a break from shooting a tense scene with Josh Holloway (Sawyer). "To be frank, when we did my last flashback in Season 3, I was scared because I felt like there was nothing of Kate's story left to tell. The flash-forwards open up a whole plethora of stories."

Jorge Garcia, who plays Hurley, agrees: "It's very much that Season 1–type thing where you get a script and immediately wanna read it."

The flash-forward device wasn't the only twist the actors were buzzing about. They also talked of the producers' hard-won decision to end Lost for good after 48 more episodes, or three seasons of 16 each. (Lindelof and Cuse declined to be interviewed for this story, due to the writers' strike.) But the consensus among the cast was that a defined end date would focus — and restore faith in — the show.

And then came the strike.

By the time production shut down shortly before Thanksgiving, only eight episodes had been shot. But with the network's stash of scripted programming dwindling by the day, ABC Entertainment president Stephen McPherson made the call to air what there is of Lost's fourth season, starting January 31, in the plum Thursdays-at-9 slot previously occupied by Grey's Anatomy. (McPherson also declined comment.)

Doing so will certainly allow Lost fans a long-awaited fix. But it also runs the risk of frustrating them, once again, if additional episodes can't be produced. (Sources say that, even if the strike should end this month, it would be highly unlikely that all 16 episodes could be completed, and they certainly couldn't air consecutively through May as originally planned.)

Still, there is good news. TV Guide has seen the season's first four episodes, and they're worth the wait. An emotionally satisfying, seamless blend of flash-forwards and flashbacks, the new installments provide gaspworthy plot twists that should whip fans into a theory-spinning tizzy.

How is season 4 going so far for you?

It's going really well. The scripts are really exciting. It's very much reminiscent of the excitement of going through the scripts we got in season 1, where it was really crazy directions and like "What's going on?" Season 4 is going to be very important for people to adjust their Tivos or record the show after Lost. A lot of closing teasers are really WTF moments, and it's going to be pretty cool.

So the cliffhanger is a big focus this season?

Every season they do like to end the show with a good little something, but there have been some great final pages in scripts we've been reading.

Hurley, in the season 3 finale, finally got to show his warrior side. Are we going to see some more of that in season 4?

Gradually I think we've seen, from season 1 all the way to the van moment, Hurley slowly kind of take responsibility, slowly start to be a leader and step up, and kind of take a more leadership role. He's assuming a little more, for sure.

Has the new shooting schedule increased demand or opened up any extra opportunities for you as an actor?

Well, I don't know yet. It's opened up the break between the end of season 4 and the beginning of the next season. I know there's still talk of the impending writers' strike situation, which might turn days off into snow days, where they keep adding it to the end of the year if we can't shoot it. Who knows.

Let's talk about the numbers. Hurley's numbers, is that an issue that's resolved for Hurley? Are we ever going to see anything about that again?

I don't know. The numbers became a monster for awhile, and then they kind of faded away a bit lately. Not much has been numbers oriented recently that I can think of.

With the new people arriving on the island, does that move the threat away from the monster and the issues that were a threat to the survivors on the island to the new people? Or is that just something new to the mix?

I think it's just something new to the mix. Sure the monster's always there, but we've been living with that there for awhile, so you might give a little more weight to the slightly more unknown I guess. But the monster is definitely still on our minds for sure.

You're probably restricted on what you can say.

Yeah, I don't have that much information. I've had scenes with two of the newcomers, and my run-ins with them have been pretty ambiguous still.

So I know in earlier seasons there's been this lore about the Lost set that when the new actors come in it's very welcoming. Now that you guys are three seasons in and have built a more hardened core, is it still that kind of an open experience?

I think so. I think it's fun when new people come and join us, because it's just new dynamics and new chemistries to form with people. It kind of keeps an actor on his toes. I guess that's something you have to ask them more than us, but I always try to make an effort to bring people along and tell them where the good places are around Hawaii to hit up. Especially cause they're all living out of their hotels at the start usually.

On that note, now that the show has got an end point, I know you guys kind of started lives here. How did the prospect of production coming to an end affect you guys personally?

I'd been house hunting, but never finding anything, so now I'm definitely looking at going back to California to be closer to the business and my family and stuff. That reality I'm dealing with. I've been in the same place for three seasons so far, so I have amassed stuff that now has to either get sold off or sent back. I'm actually gonna start maybe a public storage near my sister's house, so I can send her boxes to kind of stash for me. I don't want to have to move everything at the last minute.

Okay, that isn't saying much, but I can tell you that the crew of the freighter is pretty interesting. Nearly nine months ago Lost closed it’s third season in as nail biting of a place as it had ever closed a season. The survivors had made contact with a nearby force that could either bring rescue, or devastation, depending on who you ask; yet a glimpse into the future planted the notion that rescue may not be all it is cracked up to be, particularly for a despondent drug addicted Dr. Jack whose final words from the future were “We have to go back!”

What will the new people be like? Will Desmond get back to shore in time to warn them that it is “not Penny’s boat”? Will the show return to flashbacks, and if not will the flash forwards pick up from Dr. Jack’s pleas or will we get thrown for yet another temporal loops. Speaking of ‘temporal,’ what about that weird “Orchid Orientation” video that was shown at Comic Con? Without a doubt, “Through the Looking Glass” created the most forward momentum of any season closer to date, and with the end date announced there was a lot of anticipation over where season 4 would begin, where it would go, and how fast would it get there.

As a long time fan of the series, I was a little concerned about how the Lost writer’s room would deal with getting the characters back together, address the death of Charlie, introduce the newbies, and still leave enough slack to reconnect with the mysteries of the island including ‘Jacob.’ I soon found out that this fear was entirely unfounded.

The wisdom culled from three seasons worth of exposure to Lost’s alchemy are of no use here. While some things are as expected, Jack is still over confident, Ben is still sneaky, and Locke is still, well, Locke, the execution of the plot around them is all new, done with a serious score to settle with all the critics that kvetch about Lost’s “tease and deny” strategy.

As premieres go, “Beginning of the End” is nothing that Lost fans will expect. Instead of opening with a disorienting locale and characters we don’t know, Beginning of the End begins with a headlong slam into a fast moving vignette with characters we know very well. Instead of taking three or four episodes to address the splintered ranks of the Losties, all of the characters are addressed. Perhaps best of all, instead of servicing a single item like previous premieres, “Beginning of the End” does a remarkable job of tying up much of the overlapping issues from the latter quadrant of season 3 and an even better job of setting the pace for season four.

What you really want to know is what happens though, right? Well as of right now you have a little more than ten days to learn that answer for yourself, but what I will tell you is that virtually every theme that becomes important within the first quarter (assuming 16 episodes) of the season are introduced here in complete, well paced, easy to digest nuggets that have the strange effect of swelling within your consciousness and leaving you with the feeling that you have watched not one, but maybe three or four episodes of what you remember Lost to be.

“Beginning of the End” is a crushingly emotional, action packed introduction to the Lost story, proving that four seasons in – when you might expect to see the light at the end of the tunnel begin to fade – Lost’s groundbreaking protean form still has plenty of blinding ways to dazzle and entertain in a way that is none-the-less unique unto itself.

Julia in San Diego: Lost! I just read somewhere that Sawyer might not make it through the season. Please save me from a true panic attack and tell me Sawyer isn't going anywhere!

Yes, Sawyer's going to be killed off in episode six, and from what I understand that will be the show's last-ever mention of the character. Audiences just never warmed up to him, and the writers realized it was best to simply give his off-putting storyline to a swift, clear-cut end. (I'm kidding. Seriously now, with all the stressing going on at tvdiva@eonline.com, I worry that you guys are all gonna give yourselves aneurysms. I promise you, if Sawyer were to eventually get killed off, which I consider unlikely in the extreme, the show would at least do it Nate Fisher style—that guy is gonna be around until the end in one way or another.)

I’m in Melbourne Australia and in our State Newspaper the Herald Sun they had an interview with an Australian actor called Grant Bowler. This interviewed confirmed that he had a guest role in the Season 4 of LOST but that was all that was said. The Herald Sun is Australia’s most popular newspaper so this is very reliable but I understand if you wish to publish this in the Rumours Section of your site. It did not publish any details of the character’s name so it may not be worth mentioning at all. Being an Australian actor it may indicate a “flash back” set in Australia for any character or a “flash forward” for Claire once she gets back home?

Question: Did you see the new Season 4 Lost trailer?— Nathan
Ausiello: You mean trailers. There are two of 'em floating around. There's the mucho-revealing extended trailer, which features a first look at some of this season's new faces (Ken Leung among them). And then there's a shorter theatrical trailer, which is essentially a 30-second adrenaline rush with a few mystifying images thrown in for us to stew over. And stew we have.
